Which of these is the most groundbreaking game?
For me it was Grand Theft Auto 3, a lot of those games did new things well, but didn't GTA 3 create a new genre of gaming?
Yeah it's pretty weird to have Half-Life, Halo and Call of Duty in the list, but not have Doom. You missed out Doom and didn't mention Street Fighter at all which makes this poll completely pointless.
I voted Super Mario Bros. I think that is the obviously most rationale choice, but all those games have contributed to the industry in thier own way.....
What do you mean by groundbreaking?
Groundbreaking in terms of gameplay?
Graphics?
Storytelling?
Immersion?
Genre defining?
I would put different games in top depending on the definition of groundbreaking that is being taken into consideration but I voted for super mario because of its historical significance. Mario brought video games to life just like Mickey mouse brought animation to life.
No different than the people who voted for Zelda, Half-Life, CoD, Metal Gear and Sonic as far as I'm concerned.People are actually voting for Halo? I didn't think this was that kind of community.
@Sooty: I said out of those. You cant expect me to list all games.I also wanted to list 007 for N64, but I stoped because I already have to many.
Yeah, but Doom dude? DOOM!@Sooty: I said out of those. You cant expect me to list all games.I also wanted to list 007 for N64, but I stoped because I already have to many.
Doom.
We should move on from the old games. Pong and Pac Man are ancient history, it's time to move on.
I'd say Resident Evil, but it only created the foundations for TODAY'S lame ass development style, so fuck it.

@ProfessorEss: Yeah, I know, and trust me, I would have put them, but I was afraid people are gonna jump on me for having to many. Everquest would be another one....
and I think there's some confusion between groundbreaking and influential.
Call of Duty 4 wasn't groundbreaking, it didn't do anything drastically different and played identically to Call of Duty 2, it was just set in a different era. It was influential, though, just look at how many games have perks or a system very similar now.
Doom and Half-Life are groundbreaking series in the FPS genre. Call of Duty is just a Medal of Honor competitor, I guess Battlefield 1942 deserves a mention and KOTOR probably does.
Again, a poll with Everquest but not Ultima Online would still be weird to me.@ProfessorEss: Yeah, I know, and trust me, I would have put them, but I was afraid people are gonna jump on me for having to many. Everquest would be another one....
But anyways. It's just a poll, your poll, duwhatchalike.
Lets not compare games, it's stupid and childish.
Anyway most of the games on your list aren't revolutionary in a significant way.
Super Mario Bros.
That's pretty much when video games transformed into what we recognize them as today.

Xbox Live, it killed gaming in 2 short years. Pretty impressive if you ask me.
Weird
Half-Life, hands down. What other game on that list was a first title for a developer that perfectly married (for the time) tight control, great graphics, an awesome/startling single-player campaign that can't be forgotten, terrifyingly acute AI (for the time), multiplayer, AND the proper tools for the modding community to go ahead and create whatever they wanted right from the get-go? I can't think of any other title.
If I made this, it would be a pretty different list. Super Mario Bros fits, but where is GTA 3? And certainly the original Legend of Zelda was more influential than Ocarina, right? AND WHERE THE HELL IS TETRIS?!?
And what the Hell is Warcraft, Halo, CoD, Gran Tourismo, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and Sonic the Fucking Hedgehog doing here? All of those games are important, but groundbreaking? I think you maybe should have been more specific about what you meant by groundbreaking
