Usually the forgotten member of a group, who is your favorite bassist ever? Personally, it's hard for me to narrow it down to 10. But for my all time favorite, I'd probably have to say Cliff Burton of Metallica. Based on what I've seen of his performances, the man had a charisma like no other, and was really fucking good at what he did. No offense to the other brilliantly talented bassists that graced our ears like Steve Harris, John Entwistle, Mike Dirnt, or Lemmy, they're some of my favorites as well.
What are yours?
Your favorite bassists?
Robert Trujillio is an amazing, versatile and technically consistent bassist. And he is fucking wasted in Metallica. Those guys will never let him be all he can, and has been. Think what you will of Burton, but he wasn't the best bass player in the world. Metallica know that too. Such a shame.
Also Justin Chancellor rocks my sock clean off. As does Mr Claypool.
More than any other bass player I can think of, Vic Wooten is the guy I'd want to sit and listen to for the longest.
Or just to talk to the dude. Check out his book, The Music Lesson. So good!
I'd like to mention Seth Govan. So tasteful.
In a heavier context, John Myung and Dan Briggs also both bring a lot of chops, but really tasteful playing.
From a purely technical point of view, maybe Billy Sheehan? Insaaaaaaaaaane player, but kinda boring to listen to, I find. And I hate his tone...
My favorite bassist would have to be John Entwistle of The Who.
Just by his presence alone onstage, has he cemented his position that has earned him the name, 'The Ox'. While the rest of the band members put on a show, he remains still, acting like the foundation on which The Who build their stage presence.
Adam Clayton - U2

As a bass player - so proud of this thread!
Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne and Glen Diani from One Minute Silence are my two favourite bass players. Ryan Martinie's tone and performance on 'L.D.50' is just incredible - still blows my mind today. Glen Diani on 'Buy Now..... Saved Later' is impressive, but he really shines on 'Available in All colours' - not the most technical stuff but he so perfectly compliments everything, it's just absolute genius!
Shit, I've forgotten his name, but the first bass player for Jamiroquai is also a personal fav. .................Stuart Zender, I think his name is.
Marcus Miller, Flea, John Paul Jones, Peter Cetera, and Roger Waters all come to mind as fabulous bassists. Also think Wolstenholme is pretty solid, and while Geddy Lee is beyond extremely talented, he's also a bit of a blowhard who occasionally just plays to impress, and is fabulously overrated due to the high quality of their live shows (as is all of Rush.)
Paolo Gregoletto from Trivium:
This second video is to show you how much the fans think Trivum rocks, pretty intense video I have to say. Paolo is the one screaming in front of the camera by the way:)
I far prefer the funky bass player (bootsy and flea) to the normal players since they don't stay in the background and can actually be the driving force of most of their songs
So yeah, I would have to say Geddy Lee.
Throw in a little Les Claypool for good measure.
This thread makes me sad..... to see anyone choosing "Flea" as their favorite bassist.
There are so many bassists out there that dont get credit.
My Top 4:
1)Mike 'cactus' Gordon
2)Les 'colonel' Claypool
3)Bootsy
4)Geddy Lee
I am very very sad to see Flea so many times and no JACO FUCKING PASTORIUS. He was a freak, he was to the bass what Michael Jordan was to basketball.
Whoever said Andy Rourke is smart. Another great bassist would have to be Juan Alderate from The Mars Volta. Everything he does it sick but the Day of the Baphomets intro will blow you away.
