It was confirmed by Rockstar on their site to be released July 8th. Just now waiting for a PC version to hopefully come out
Red Dead Redemption backwards comparability on Xbox One is happening
Awesome, been feeling like playing through that again for a while now, and my 360 broke a few months ago.
Just in time to get a digital copy on the cheap with the Xbox sale happening right now.
I hope it runs decently on an Xbox One. Certainly isn't a guarantee with backwards compatible games.
I really don't understand why people hype this, its the same game, running sometimes worse.
First off, I've gotten really used to the Xbox One controller, so not having to use the markedly worse 360 triggers and slippery thumbsticks is a big plus. Also, I have the 360 hooked up in the guest room on the smaller TV, as it's not my primary console anymore. Additionally, RDR is one of the best last-gen games, which I just kinda wanted an excuse to play through again, and now I have it. More importantly, this makes a PC version theoretically more of a possibility via UWP, so it would be cool if that finally happened for the non-console folks who never played it (if R* and MS are smart, they bundle that with the PC release of RDR2 if/when that comes out). Finally, the existence of another version of a classic game helps ensure it doesn't disappear into the ether anytime soon, so that's a good thing from a preservation standpoint.
We don't have anything new to give you, so have this game you have been screaming about. And we will have our fingers crossed that you forget that there is nothing new around the corner.
On a side not, i am very curious as to what big procentage of the people moaning about this, will actually play the game. Im not saying the game is a worthless bag of trash. I enjoyed most of it. But the power of nostalgia is a fickle little biscuit.
I fire this this game up every once in a while and just ride my horse around the map for a few minutes. Now I can do that without unplugging anything!
As a result, the 360 versions of Red Dead Redemption have jumped to the top of the "Movers & Shakers" list on Amazon. A 4,277% sales increase on the Game of the Year version.
I don't get why people are shitting on this... Whats wrong with people being able to play an oldie but goodie on their new console hooked up to their big screen TVs?
Plus if you don't have the game you can download it for $7.50, what is not to like about this?
RDR is one of my forever games, I fire it up at least once a year just to roam around in that world. I still have a 360 hooked up, but this is good for those that don't.
I really don't understand why people hype this, its the same game, running sometimes worse.
It's convenient.
I would love to be able to play Dead Space on my PS4 because I love that series just like how some people love Red Dead and don't feel like keeping several systems hooked up to their TV's.
Also it's exciting because the backwards compatibility could potentially lead to a PC release which is what a lot of people have been clamoring for since the game was originally released. A lot of those people that only play games on the PC would love to finally experience it.
If you never cared much for Red Dead then I suppose it's not a big deal.

I wonder if any of the staff or voice actors who worked on the game will see any additional revenue from the re-release.
It's not really a re-release. Just the same release made available on a new platform. If any of the staff or talent had a royalty agreement with Rockstar, then they would get paid according to those contracts.
Let's assume, for example, that Rob Wiethoff (the voice of John Marston) had a contract where he would receive 0,1% of profits from each sold copy until perpetuity, then he would continue to receive that 0,1%. However, I doubt that any of the crew behind Red Dead Redemption, outside of top executives like the Housers, have a royalty clause. Who knows.
just for posterity here's some more news on it from Rockstar NewsWire;
If you already own any Xbox 360 disc-based version of Red Dead Redemption, you will just need to insert the disc into your Xbox One on Friday and the console will begin downloading the game to your hard drive. If you have the digital version of the game on Xbox 360, it will automatically show up in the Ready to Install section on your Xbox One on Friday. For more details about Xbox 360 backward compatibility on Xbox One, check out the official Xbox page at http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/backward-compatibility
Kind of strange requests in the NewsWire thread too - lot of asking about PS4 backwards compatibility - can't decide if;
- serious
- not
- They want PS4 backwards compatibility on the whole
- They want it on PS Now available to rent
I should buy this game digitally while it's on sale, but the thought that I'll never get around to replaying it just won't stop nagging at me. I still have the disc, but this would be much more convenient.
After a couple hours with the game on Xbox One, it seems to run just fine. Very happy to see a steady frame rate.
Also this game is still awesome.
Word, thanks OP!
(edit) I have not played it in well over a year. When I moved I lost the power cord thing to my 360. Could not be bothered to get another one and don't want another thing hooked up to my TV anyway. I had lost hope this would come out so stopped checking.
@painkiller80: sony users
@jjweatherman: I'm very happy to hear this, I was worried that it would run like shit.
According to Digital Foundry its also the best performing version of the game released: link

Didn't scroll to see if anyone answered you, but I just grabbed it and it runs well on Xbox One. I've only done a few of the opening tutorial things but framerate hasn't dropped once.
The digital foundry analysis is very positive. Though it really makes me want a new version because it's so rough looking. They updated their article for the Undead Nightmare addon which runs even better:
