    Concept »

Developed by Swedish studio DICE, the Frostbite Engine focuses on destructible environments and HDR sound. The engine made its debut with Battlefield: Bad Company.

    Why Frostbite?

I was just wondering after all the fuss about Frostbite 2.0: Why is it called Frostbite?
Anyone knows why? Is it because there is a mountain called Frostbite, or did one of the developers lose a toe or something because of frostbite?

    Why is anything named anything?

Maybe it has to do with how toes and fingers can fall off if you have frostbite, just like the destructibility of the engine.

Or maybe they just thought it sounded cool.

It's because the man who created the engine lost both his legs to frostbite while attempting to climb Mt Everest.

Maybe because they thought it was cold outside when they were going to come up with the name, you know, heating didn't work or something.
Or maybe they looked out the window and saw a polar bear and thought "Hey, polar bears like the cold, why don't we call it Frostbite". Yes we have polar bears walking the streets here in Sweden, honestly...

I hate to tell you but all engine names are stupid. For example HeroEngine(this is one word), BRender, Renderware, Unreal, Gamebryo, Panda3D, Lithtech Jupiter EX, I could go on. As I see it if you add Frostbite to the list it wouldn't be the black sheep.

Well, the programmer of Frostbite  Steve Cartwright was later in life an Executive Producer at Electronic Arts, which published the Battlefield series.

I can think of a lot of engines that don't have a back story to their original name. Sometimes, it just has to be something catchy and easy to remember.

Why not? It's certainly more creative than Id Tech or SpeedTree.

It sounds catchy and most of these name types are or are devised from simple code names thought up quickly as a name for a project I assume.

I always thought it had something to do with the fact that Epic's flagship game with which they proved the unreal engine was a game called unreal.
