Its hard to believe, but GTA4 is about to turn 1 years old. The game was released on April 29, 2008, so less than two weeks from now, on April 29, 2009, GTA4 will have it's one year anniversary. GTA4 was no doubt one of the most anticipated game of all time, and have sold millions and millions of copies worldwide. It received high praises from video game critics all across the internet. And, with little controversy, it received the highest score a video game could get, a big whopping "10" at IGN and Gamespot. Not a single game released ever got a perfect "10" since The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time back in 1998.
The score set the internet ablazed with people disputing how a game could ever get a perfect score, while others argued that the score was justified and that GTA4 was the greatest game they ever played. But, despite all the disagreements and controversies, we can all agree that GTA4 was a huge success, both in sales figures (no suprise there) and in general, the overall game itself.

    "What did you call me?"

For me personally, I think GTA4 is a special game. I still remember the day before the game's release like it was yesterday. How I was so excited that the only thing on my mind as I laid in bed was what's the first thing I would do once I get control of Niko. I think most of you reading this can relate to some extent, lol. Finally when I got my copies of GTA4, opening up the game box felt like I was a kid again opening up his presents on Christmas morning. After that, it was pretty much history. The disc was in my gaming console, and it was 5 straight hours of non-stop killing, beating, shooting, stealing, and just hardcore-GTA-mayhem!

    My playground of destruction!
    My playground of destruction!

So now that the game is out for almost a year and everyone has played it, people like to look back at the game and think about whether or not GTA4 deserved the perfect score or not. My thought: does it really matter? At the end of the day, a score is nothing but just a number. GTA4 is much more than a bunch of 9's or 10's, it is about the experience the players get when he/she is driving through Liberty City while inhabiting the living and breathing world that Rockstar has brillianlty crafted where, in my opinion, no other open-world game has ever achieved. The city is as lively and fascinating as its characters in GTA4, which i find to be some of the most memorable characters in a video game. I would also like to mention that Niko is now one of my favorite video game character, next to Solid Snake of course : ).

"We gotta take over the Streets man!!"

Finally, I would like to congrat Rockstar and the Houser Brothers for creating another awesome GTA game.GTA4, in my opinion, is a true classic which deserves to be ranked among the best.
I cannot wait to see what's next, besides the DLC, in the GTA franchise. But whatever the Houser Brothers and Rockstar have up their sleeve for the next GTA installment, I have faith that they will continue the tradition of making an awesome GTA game.

Until then, I would just like to wish GTA4 an early HAPPY 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!

It's a game that you have to  play again and think about to truly appreciate the score and the hyperbole people got behind. At first when you play the game as GTA, wanting to shoot dudes and do crazy stuff, you are baffled, confused, and dissapointed. But after you read some editorials and some experiences people had, then played it agian, you realized it was a masterpiece, gaming's closest thing to its Citizen Kane. To me, I get frustrated when people say it wasn't all that or it was overrated, because this game shoulden't be in the section of 'Why did this game get a 10?" and instead be in the "Is this game art?" arguement.

It truly is a masterpiece. The Lost and the Damned was totally excellent as well. I just rented Skate 2, and several times while playing it I've thought to myself "Man, I'd so much rather be playing GTAIV again!" But I think I'll wait for the next batch of DLC before I go back.

How is this a cult classic? In order for it to be a cult classic, it has to be known by only a few people, which does not describe GTA at all.

What a bad game... Thanks for reminding me of the year anniversary of GTA IV. When I bought such an overrated game. Plus, I got the extremely shitty Collector's Edition. You know, with the lockbox that had a generic key that any idiot could break into. The messenger bag that could probably carry some toilet paper and eggs so you can make a visit to Rockstar's headquarters. Plus the dump of a soundtrack and the lackluster artbook.

It outdid all previous incarnations in the series because of a few often overlooked aspects: immersion, atmosphere, tone and focus. I'm all for arcade gameplay but what Rockstar has achieved with GTA IV has truly pushed the boundaries of what is expected of a videogame. I just don't get all the complaints about wanting parachutes, jetpacks and sex toy shaped melee weapons...it's been done.

    OTT exagaration is OTT?

How the fuck was it 'horrendous'? It was incredible in my opinion, I mean I could understand if you don't like it. But you're plain wrong if you think it's horrendous.

I found it impossible to connect with a dude being bossed around by a fat black chick. The story seemed all over the place at times, helping out your gay friend then robbing a bank lol. I also think Niko was by far the worst character of the series, he's a big pussy.

Actually Niko was the first GTA protagonist showing some genuine humanity, as opposed to the typical crime archetypes that were Claude, Tommy and CJ. And when was Niko ever 'bossed around'? If anything he always seemed to question any form of 'authority' and was reluctant to truly ally himself with any his employers. The intricacies of the story were quite cleverly connected, and as whole it made sense and aspired to something more than just being about a criminals rise to power. I think it's great Rockstar decided to drop the film hommages and craft a story that was truly theirs. Like it or not, this is where the series is going.

Actually, I would have to disagree and say CJ was the first. CJ was actually not such a bad guy. Really, he was trying to save his hood and stop the flow of drugs into Los Santos. That's a pretty positive goal. Not to mention CJ himself was drug free and turns down drugs at every opportunity in the game. San Andreas gets slammed because of its violence and the whole hot coffee scandal, but nobody ever shines any light on the fact that the entire game is basically a big, long anti-drug message. Sure, he was pushed around a bit by others and had to follow orders from some corrupt cops, but he made some alliances with pretty decent people and got the job done. When CJ was doing bad stuff, it's usually because a powerful and corrupt figure had him by the balls. In the end, though, he accomplished what he set out to do, he broke loose from the individuals that manipulated him, cleaned up the Grove, and even ended up pretty rich along the way.

A very good game. Nothing ball bursting. LMFAO at calling it Godfather of video games. I want you to name one thing this game did that turned the game industry upside down and make developers stop what they were doing and say "Wait, I want to make this." The past GTA games did that. That was because GTAIII, GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas was offering something fresh, well polished and outrageous. GTAIV was only well polished. The single player missions got repetitive as hell. The cover mechanic was just broken at times. The city wasn't as liveley as I would expect out of a GTA game on a 360 and PS3.

But it was still enjoyable. It was still fun to boot up the game for 10 minutes just to play with the physics. I really liked some of the charaacters. I would have liked to play the DLC, but I have it for the PS3.

    @TheGreatGuero:

Yeah, you're right on that one. I have yet to finish SA so that was not my place to judge. Still, my point about Niko's story aspiring to something more than just being a badass still holds up. I get the feeling Brundage just wants to play Marcus Phoenix in every game, if you gnomesane? Him calling Niko a pussy and all...also I reek a hint of racism in his comment (btw, who is this 'fat black chick' he's talking about? He must be thinking of Elizabeta, but she's Puerto-Rican.

You're darn right she's Puerto-Rican. Dude better get that straight before she goes straight up loco on him! Haha. Anyway, yeah, I agree that Niko is no push-over. He'll reluctantly do things he doesn't want to, but he's not anyone's puppet and certainly no wimp. I wouldn't worry about what Brundage said. He has no idea what he's talking about.

I bought an Xbox 360 just for this game in June of last year. The hype was still big, but I was let down. It was the same but more confined in its story. I felt trapped unable to enjoy and play, never finishing it.
