Can you just drive around and know where you are? I can have a basic idea of where abouts I am but I don't know every corner like I did in Vice City. I definatley din't know every corner in San Andreas. Could you do without the map?

Take on the role of Niko Bellic, a Serbian immigrant who comes to the US at his cousin Roman's request, to find a better life, search for "that special someone" and participate in lawless activities in an upgraded generation of Liberty City.
How well do you know the map?
Liberty City is just too huge for me. I have a vague recollection of parts of it but navigating without a map sounds insane.
I know it very well, like I don't need to use the map or GPS anymore. Same with all previous 3D GTA's as well :D
"I have a basic idea of where I'm cruising around in Liberty City, but I live and die by the GPS in that game."
I kind of know my way around, but I usually use the GPS... I don't think I could live without it in GTA 4

I have a pretty good feel for Liberty City. I know most of the areas pretty well. However, there are a few areas that never really got any attention in the game's missions, such as the golf course. Did you even know there was a golf course? I never would have found it if it wasn't shown in one of the helicopter tour rides, and even then I had to use a helicopter myself to find it later. I'll usually use the map to help me get from Algonquin to Alderney via that underground tunnel, but I think I generally know where all the other major bridges are. If you took off the game's radar and on-screen map, perhaps it'd be more difficult. Regardless, I can't wait to revisit the place again with the new DLC.
I recently stopped using the GPS in the middle of my second playthrough, and suprisingly I never get lost. I peek at the map from time to time I must admit, but 95% of the time I'm very aware of my location and surroundings. It helps that Liberty City is stuffed with recognizable landmarks, and that every burrough has a distinct feel. Also, as Tylea002 mentioned, TL&D has done wonders for my knowledge of the Alderney road map. All in all, I know the map pretty well.
I think I have a basic grasp of the city layout down. May be I would have a better hang of it if navigation would be handled differently by the game. As it is though I'm pretty content to follow the GPS rout generating at the start of every major mission/event cutting corners only at times when I know exactly where I'm going.
Oh yeah, those I quickly picked up on. Now that I think about it I suppose I'm actually not as bad at it as I originally thought since most of the times I remember looking up locations was in TLAD DLC since that part of the map isn't really mission heavy in the original game. Otherwise I'm pretty sure I would be able to easily navigate to any location of the general map without looking at the GPS, though perhaps not as much nowa days, its been a while since I last played the game.
I'd like to think I know my way around Liberty City pretty well. I tend to stick to the GPS when on a mission, but if I'm roaming free around the city then I can generally navigate without too much mapwork.
This time round, I have to try and play without using the GPS system much. Even though I've played through 3 times and kind of know my way around, I think I'd still get lost without it.
It's really exciting to think of playing without using the GPS at all! That should be an achievement itself.
The only gta that I actually learned the whole map was vice city, for san andreas I always used the map, and gta iv is no exception, without the gps I'm lost, I can't drive anywhere without the gps. :(
