Anyone agree? Feels like a return to the old-school survival horror of the PS1. The music and atmosphere of this game is top-notch, truly immersive stuff! :D
I Am Alive
Game » consists of 6 releases. Released Mar 07, 2012
I Am Alive is a survival game. The story revolves around a man trying to find his family in the ruined Midwestern city of Haventon after a devastating, apocalyptic event.
A better Silent Hill game than downpour.

Do you know what Silent Hill is? I Am Alive is nothing like Silent Hill.
Of course I know what Silent Hill is. I see a lot of similarities here mechanically. The crippling fog, the overworld map with various sections all blocked off (and then scribbled on the map,) the creepy droning music, the methodical pacing..
I haven't played I Am Alive, but I know that it at least isn't a horror game. And first & foremost, that is exactly what the Silent Hill series is about. You can say maybe you prefer the survivalist gameplay, but comparing them together as a whole is silly. It'd be like someone saying Uncharted 3 is a better Gears of War game than Gears of War 3.

I'll grant you that yes, there are similarities mechanically... but that's where the similarities end. Silent Hill is all about the creepy atmosphere, the disturbing and grotesque imagery, the main character battling some form of inner demon and the occult. Also, how many endings does I Am Alive have? And if there is more than one, is one of them either UFO or dog related?
It may be a better game than Downpour, but it certainly isn't a better Silent Hill.
And now, just because...
If you're just going by Patrick tearing down Downpour, don't bother. He doesn't even make sense in his criticism. He complains that you should run in Silent Hill games, and then stands and fights against three enemies. He formed an opinion before turning it on, and then played it to confirm that opinion.
Downpour is the best SH since 4, arguably 3.
It may be a technical disaster but I'll be damned if it isn't a great example of what makes Silent Hill great.
@Brodehouse:
Yes! God, I haven't even watched the QL because I'm sure it was brutal, but everything I've heard him say elsewhere was so unfair. And the way he simultaneously preaches unto Siren Blood Curses breaks anything he has to say about Downpour apart frankly, leaving his entire outlook on horror games inconsistent.

Wrong.
You sure do make a compelling argument.

I gave his comment the same amount of thought that his comment took to post.
I just finished Downpour. Though it was the first Silent Hill game I've actually played, I didn't think it was a bad game at all.
@Brodehouse:
Played a bit of it, wasn't impressed with what I played at all. I wasn't expecting much, but my expectations are never so strong that they will stop me from then enjoying a game if it proves me wrong. Downpour simply didn't prove me wrong.
@Kandycane2029:
Nice, now play the first 3 in the series and prepare to lose your shit! The first does indeed look very dated by today's graphical standards, but I would argue that the graphics do a lot for the feeling of the game. Makes everything seem distinctly more "alien" and... Wrong, I guess. SH2 and 3 are both absolutely gorgeous.
@Creamypies:
Sure, thematically Silent Hill goes far deeper than I Am Alive does, but I think the mood, gameplay and pacing all do what SH used to do so well, to a much larger extent than any of the more recent entries into the series. I was way too high to expand on why I feel this way last night, as I posted this topic nigh-on immediately after finishing the game, and then went to bed, but I'll go into more detail here.
I game mostly for the immersion factor. My ability to suspend my disbelief knows no bounds, so long as a game has a powerful and gripping atmosphere and mood. When it comes to horror, I like to be made to feel unempowered, vulnerable, lost and isolated. Now, while I Am Alive may not actually be billed as a horror game, I feel that it achieves that vulnerability and isolation that I feel is so important to get right. The section of the game just after you get the gas mask, and it shifts to night time, and you're wandering the very lowest level of the city is the best example of this IMO. No enemies, no puzzles, just an all-consuming cloud of dust, zero visability and sustained chords of ominous doom! Beautiful. And so immersed was I at this point in the game, that my heartrate was through the roof, I was shaking slightly and I could do nothing but continue through the fog to my destination. So while the plot and subtext remained paper-thin and despite the game becoming relatively more combat heavy as it went on (cool combat mechanics though, dig the ideas at work here, threatening dudes with an empty pistol is a stroke of genius,) it didn't taint my overall experience with the game, which was frankly pretty fucking terrifying, and this is why I feel it to be a better SH game than Downpour; it didn't need gruesome, otherworldly enemies or well drawn characters to draw me in, just some thick fog and some good drones.
@Lysergica33: Again, I'm not disputing your immersion and enjoyment of I Am Alive. All I am saying is that your statement that it is a better Silent Hill game than Downpour is way off. Saying that I Am Alive is a better survivalhorror game than Downpour would've been far more appropriate.
So yes, they may be similar... but without the things I mentioned in my previous post, you don't have yourself a Silent Hill game. You have yourself a survival horror game.
