Your experience can vary, but worth a try
I played Ingress for nearly two years and while I would recommend it wholeheartedly you will likely see the best and worst in people the more you play. Ingress is best when you work with the local community to coordinate attacks, missions in either Google Hangouts or in person. The more involved you become you can work with multiple states or even countries on global scale operations. Achievements and stat collection that have been added to keep the dangling carrot out in front of people on top of the levels you gain through playing, and a mission system that is still being tested, that will utilize player submissions
The best part of Ingress is the people you will meet after playing. Players have come together in ways I never thought a game could cause; helping another player free a car during a blizzard; helping to change a flat tire; raising funds for areas Ingress players frequent; supporting teammates and opponents alike going through hard times in life....depression, cancer etc. While the community can really shine, with all things there are people who are too competitive or just mean spirited, and if unchecked can split a community pretty fast. Despite all the good things in our community, one player in our area decided to call 911 on players who trespassed into a park, and what followed brought negativity for many involved, which is why I say you see the worst in people also.
I have made some lifelong friends in this game and I think most people who play this regularly will too, and I think that is pretty great considering these are gamers in your area vs. making friends in a MMO that are great but you will never get to meet.
