    Kinect Support

    Concept »

Kinect is a camera and depth sensor-based peripheral for the Xbox 360 that allows users to interact with and play games using their whole bodies, rather than using a standard controller.

Is Kinect even the same hardware as Natal?

What we saw in 2009 at E3 was really quite impressive. Everything revealed in 2010 has been buggy, clumsy, and basically just Wii rip-offs.

Two possibilities as I see it:

    1. Kinect has been downgraded in terms of its capabilities. Natal turned out to be too expensive to produce.
    or
    2. Most of the Natal stuff we saw at E3 2009 was fake.

Kinda sucks to think about, if that's true.

It sucks either way though. They were pitching it as a groundbreaking thing.

Natal was PR and Marketing putting together videos. Kinect was actual demoes and games. Much like the Red Steel first trailer to release transition.

It's just interesting that the final product is such a clumsy mess. And that they're going after a market who got sick of motion controls two years ago and whose Wiis are collecting dust. What can possibly make MS think they can sell this thing?

Nah dudes, Natal totally could scan a skateboard into any game, but they removed it, because it's a dumb idea!

The E3 2009 video of Natal (he one with the fighting kid and skateboardscanning) was not an actual tech demo.. It was a showcase to show people what Natal/Kinect could be used for in the future , and the footage shown was not actual tech working.
Of course as we've seen now Kinect probably won't do all that was shown in that 2009 trailer...

Not to mention making empty claims meant to get people excited. You have to love companies who do this and then put out something that is shitty compared to peoples inflated expectations. Though I may not be their biggest fan, this is one of the things apple does right, they show it when its done.

I'm almost positive that it will work better than we've been shown, same with the Wii, it sounded and looked bad initially but it worked and developers (well some of them) got better at making games for it.

I'm not just talking about that trailer, most of that was obviously pre-rendered, anyone can see that.

But the stage demos too, were more impressive than what we've seen this year, and some of that seemed like it was live, which made me consider the possibility that the hardware was better back then but turned out to be too pricy to manufacture.

I dunno I really liked the painting demo, as well as Milo. Interesting stuff.

MS said they took out the processors from the thing.  Now the 360's CPU handles that work.

Milo as it was presented was a lie.  Otherwise I didn't think what we saw then was any better than what we saw now.

Then again, they didn't show a whole lot last year. They showed the ricochet game, the elephant drawing thingy and BAM there it is.. Did they show much more? Mostly it was just avatars moving like the people in front of the camera (Or tried to). EDIT: Milo as well.
This year however they showed more actual games, and in my opinion it is more the games that seem lacking and not the actual tech, which is why the hole thing for me came out as a dissapointment.
Further down the line, they'll might find some great uses for this in "real" games, but until then this doesn't seem good.
