    Overview

Mahjong Sengoku Jidai (loosely translated to "Warring States Period Mahjong") is a riichi mahjong game developed by Sanritsu and published by Sega for the Sega Mark III in Japan on October 18, 1987.

The sole mahjong adaptation for the system (although the system is backwards compatible with the Sega SG-1000's three mahjong games), Mahjong Sengoku Jidai includes both two-player and four-player variants of Japanese mahjong, each with a variety of rule settings and a variety of comical opponents. In addition, the game includes a simple tournament mode using the two-player variant.

It is seen as a reworked home version of, or successor to, Sanritsu's earlier arcade eroge Mahjong Kyoujidai, with all erotic elements removed. Despite the name, there does not seem to be any reference to the Sengoku Jidai (the Japanese "Warring States Period"). The game later received an eroge successor for Japanese computers, known as Mahjong Kyoujidai Special.

    Gameplay

The game includes three difficulty levels and a variety of rule options (all of which are enabled by default):

    • 喰断么 (Kui-tanyao) - Allows the tanyao (no terminal or honor tile) yaku to be counted with an exposed hand.
    • 一発 (Ippatsu) - After declaring riichi, players can receive an additional yaku if they receive a winning tile within an uninterrupted set of opponent tile draws.
    • 槓ウラドラ (Kan-uradora) - An additional uradora is revealed for each kandora in play.
    • ノーテン罰符 (Noten-bappu) - After an exhaustive draw, players without a tenpai hand must give penalty points to those with a tenpai hand.
    • 二飜しばり (Ryanhan-shibari) - If a player has remained the dealer for five consecutive hands (with exhaustive draws and/or dealer wins), players must have a yaku with at least two-han to declare the next win.
    • 八連荘 (Paa-renchan) - Players who win their eighth consecutive hand receives an additional yakuman on their eighth win.
    • 西入 (Sha-nyuu) - If the top player does not reach 30,000 points by the end of the second round (South), the game plays a third round (West). Not available in Tournament mode.
    • ヤキトリ (Yakitori) - At the end of the game, players who have not won a single hand must give penalty points to those who have. Only available in the four-player variant.
