The airport was named after Merrill C. Meigs.

In March 2003 Chicago's Mayor Richard M. Daley ordered the airport to be shut down without prior notice, bulldozing the airstrip at night and stranding several planes, which were later forced to take off from the taxiway.

In video games, the airport became noteworthy for being the default starting airport of the Microsoft Flight Simulator series throughout the 80's and 90's. It was also available as a driving course in Midtown Madness.
