I need more gold to complete this. I have not found a gold vein in two days now. Its driving me mad.

Today I started a quarry 25x25. I have dug it 14 deep thus far. Nothing yet.

Previous to that I was doing random tunneling. I find diamonds more often than gold. Which seems odd.

Or maybe I am going about this all wrong. Do I even need the powered tracks. Or can I just constantly get in and out and push myself along, as long as from start to finish I travel over 500m?

I have been working under the pretense that it has to be in one action. You get in, and travel the distance in one go.

@oulzac: I'm pretty sure you have to do it in one go, so powered tracks are pretty much needed, but at the same you can also take advantage of the gravity, building a high tower and then making it like a roller-coaster down - that way you don't need so much gold for powered tracks.

@oulzac: You really don't need too many gold rails. I'm not sure how different the xbox version physics are, but if it's anything like on the pc, an occupied minecart will move a looooong distance unpowered. I haven't played in a while so my numbers aren't super exact, but you basically need about 4 powered rails (sloped if you want) to boost you up to max speed, and another 5-10 spaced out along the track.

Here's a good video on minecart physics:

I'm sad to say that, to get this achievement, I jumped into a fellow forum chap's world, got in his minecart and rode that bitch all the way to the end.

The maps in the 360 version are only around 1024x1024 I believe, which is why the 360 version's requirement was halved.

I believe that was me. I was helping a friend get a different achievement and saw you enter my world. I normally escort guests to the track to help them out but by the time I could get away I checked the map and saw you flying north at a speed only attainable in a cart.

@oulzac: Depends on the map, the one I'm on I have found good amounts of gold and diamond right on the bedrock level. But on other maps and as people have suggested 12 blocks up from bedrock, give or take is where you are like to have good luck. When in doubt just keep digging, but of course there are better methods than others. For instance you can drill holes every third block (ie XOOXOOX with x being a hole) it gives you greater coverage to find potential goodies while limiting how much you need to digg out.

Just get a lot of iron. A lot! Exactly 208. Then 8 cobblestone. (shouldn't be too had...) plus 32 sticks. Make two minecarts then as much tracks as you can. You should have a little bit higher than 500. Make a furnace and combine it with a minecart. Also a decent amount of coal. Place the furnace cart behind you. Pale the minecart in front and enjoy the ride. To get the iron I would say to find a decent cave system and explore it.

Dont cheat. Sure you can place the iron in a dispenser then without exiting the menu have a friend destroy it. Then you'll drag the item to your inventory and walk over to the chest. Open that grab the 64 iron and drop it one by one to how ever much you want and get the achievement buuuuuuut you'll feel like a cheater.
