One of the most captivating fighting games I've played.

I grew up playing the occasional games of Street Fighter II on my uncle's SNES, Soul Calibur II on the Gamecube, the Smash Bros series, and then got into Street Fighter IV, Mortal Kombat 9, and Injustice on the PC. I always had fun with fighting games but never bothered to learn much more than a few special moves or learning when to guard properly. Usually played single player matches against easy to medium level cpus and got my fill with the titles. Something about the way Mortal Kombat X was shaping up really intrigued me. The variation system seemed cool, the new characters looked fun and interesting without diverging too much from the core series, and the fatality animations were unreal. I picked it up on launch day for PC (which was a huge mistake at first) and now that I've had the game for about a month I think I can safely say it's one of the best fighting games I've ever played and it's flat out fun.

Visuals - This game looks great. The detail in the characters animations, the subtle differences in the costumes based on which variation you choose, the menus, the backgrounds, etc. all look great. Compare a screenshot from MK9 from 4 years ago to a screenshot from MKX today. Yes, this is a new generation of consoles or whatever, but the models and designs in MKX are vastly superior.

Gameplay - I love how tight this game feels. This is the first game where I've really bothered looking into combos and mechanics and I'm loving how it plays. I started off with Cassie Cage, learning how to use her special moves and using meter burn rather than letting it build and using an X-Ray which may or may not hit. I started to learn basic combos that I could use rather than mashing buttons or giving away my moves based on animations. I have now started doing the same with Kitana and enjoying it quite a bit. The Test Your Luck modifier game types are very fun when hanging out with friends who might not have as much of a grasp on the game yet. And as bad as I still am online, it's very fun to enter a king of the hill match and watch 2 guys try and fight through the netcode on their way to victory.

Story Mode - The story mode is definitely shorter than MK9's and I wish that there was more to it. It's definitely fun and the cutscenes as pointed out by others feels like a grown up Saturday Morning Cartoon. I enjoy the Kombat Kids, and I enjoy some of the twists and turns it takes. This game won't win any best narrative awards, but the story mode campaign makes this that much more fun to a casual fan like myself over something like Street Fighter IV.

Other - A lot has been said about Mortal Kombat's micro transactions. These definitely feel like the publisher pushing something on the developer to include these as they do feel out of place for this type of game. I personally think the Krypt is a lot of fun and that the easy fatalities are silly and have never used them since I can just go into the pause menu and look up the fatalities if I'm in an offline fight. So if people really want to buy these then I guess that's there prerogative, but I don't think I know of anyone who has purchased them or even cares.

Overall I think this is a very fun fighting game to pick up if you like this sort of game even a little bit. May the Special Forces faction always be victorious. There are dozens of us!
