I always thought it was weird that people would cheer for Freddy in some of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies since the character is a child raping pedophile. I am really liking his character mechanics in MK but I still find it kind of strange that I just ponied up $4.99 to play as a rapist.

I honestly don't like the idea of Freddy in this game.  It's just... weird.

People cheer for Freddy in the movies because they will always cheer against Dumb Teenagers in a battle of Dumb Teenagers versus Anything.

I don't like him as a character, but he fits pretty well into the Mortal Kombat cast. He has the right kind of disgusting attitude and look.

I've never even seen a Freddy movie, so maybe I could use some clarification. If he still a rapist in the movies? I thought he was BEFORE he became Freddy, and now he's like something else entirely. That's not to say that like he couldn't still be considered a rapist, but.. I always got the impression he now just tries to kill people. I really have no idea.

No stranger than paying $60 to play as a wide variety of brutal murderers, some of which who show quite a bit of pleasure in mutilating their opponents. (and two who appear to get sexual pleasure out of it) 

Freddy is no worse than the shit that any of the other bad guys in MK have done to their victims. 

And it is ok for people to cheer for anyone in the Mortal Kombat universe when they rip their enemies heads off, slice them in half, and do many more horrible things? Or how about people who cheer for the Joker? A villain who has murdered countless innocent people, more then our friend Freddy.

None of these characters are real, and if you are thinking the way you are then we all would be fucked up because we have cheered for people just as bad as Freddy throughout our lives.

Freddy was a child murderer before he was killed. Then he starts slowing killing off the children of the parents from Elm Street that kill him in his boiler room.

The difference in my mind is that you didn't buy it to play as him BECAUSE that's waht he is. No one likes him because of those qualities.

He's a movie character, who fucking cares what he does?

Freddy is a child murder. Not a rapist.

Because we've had tons of horror movie murderers.  That just isn't scary any more.  We are desensitized?   
 
But horror movie rapists?  That's a bit more rare, so it still has some of that creepy, shock value.  Too bad the movie kinda sucked.

You can't say for sure if he's a paedophile rapist or not. As Ed Boon says:

Although Wes Craven's original script had the character pegged as a kid fiddler, Robert Englund's Freddy is a child murderer, not a child rapist. Although I've not seen the recent remake, I'm led to believe that paedophile aspect is reintergrated. But seeing as the Mortal Kombat Freddy isn't really supposed to be either iteration, you can't really say either way.

It is strange, normally I have to pay way more for that type of role-play.

I mean, games have put us in the shoes of unsavory elements before. I have a hard time imagining the passive backstory of Freddy Krueger (which is more or less not even brought to attention in the game itself) is worse than the notion of sexing a hooker in Vice City with the full intention of chainsawing her to death after you consummated the transaction, Patrick Bateman-style.

Regardless, there's a pretty significant line between fiction and reality. And that's speaking generally. Specifically, with Mortal Kombat, the line between fiction and reality is much, much broader. If you can't separate fiction from reality, and condemn people for inhabiting characters (characters, now, not real human beings) who have no redeeming moral quality, then you probably have larger issues to worry about than whether people like beating up ninjas as a dude with third-degree burns and a knife-glove.

Moreover, like someone else has said, Freddy isn't recognizable for his somewhat obscure backstory. He's recognizable because of the absurdist black humor that separated him from the other slasher characters of his era. The same absurdist black humor that makes him a relatively obvious fit for the Mortal Kombat universe.

So, chill out.
