Apparently it's a proof of concept video for a new jack director to show to WB for them to greenlit the reboot movie he has written.

If they keep the same director, choreographer, and cast, this could work. The writing wasn't terrible, given the source material, and working in a seven minute timeframe meant cramming in a lot of references, which they did with a level of class, I thought. People will complain about abandoning the core theme and mythology of the series, but having been a fan of the franchise since I was a kid, I think it's refreshing to see a new take on the characters. My main concern at the moment is that Warner Bros. will try and change the film to appeal to more people, whether that's some form of censorship, rewrites, or casting more popular actors in the roles. The less recognizable faces, the better, in my opinion. And get rid of the dreads. Way too distracting.

Damn that is some really, really nice stuff !! By far the best movie/trailer kind of thing I've seen in a very long time. I also think this is some promotion stuff for the next game but after this, they really need to make a full movie, it's too good to get wasted like this. Actually maybe it looks so good because of the length, really high budget footage. (Hopefully not too high for a real Movie, maybe they are looking for funders with this thing.)

Update: Actress Jeri Ryan, the actress portraying Sonya Blade in the video, has confirmedvia Twitter that this is a short film created by a director to sell Warner Bros. on his Mortal Kombat pitch. "It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film," Ryan says on her Twitter page, adding " I did it as a favor to a friend. what johnny cage dead? pass...by the looks of this I will expect lui kang to be little more then just a filler I am 99 percent sure he will die too in this movie.. yup iam gonna pass.

I do like the new sub-zero concept, but cannot stand the baraka showing in this video.. I know it's just an "origin", but it was kinda lame : /  Can't wait for the mini-series though!
