Ouya
Platform »
The Ouya is an Android-based device that hooks up to TVs and plays video games.
There's a New, Revised Ouya Available

The Ouya makes me so mad for some ill-defined reason!
@purplespandex: because it's a fully functional emulator box that hooks into a TV, and you can use whatever controller you want with it.

Bafflement and sadness =/= anger. But I guess any remotely negative emotion is considered anger, right? *rolls eyes*
Putting together a more polished package makes sense, charging more for it is kind of weird.
The OUYA isn't terrible and I look forward to reconnecting mine briefly to play Soul Fjord when that comes out. It is good they are trying to improve the controller because it is the worst part of that system and the part that reminds you the most that the OUYA is a budget video game system.
I think the Ouya failed to capitalize on its chance to gain some footing before the PS4 / Xbox One hit. It was just a bit too cheap feeling even for its price and doesn't have enough exclusive games worth caring about.
Having played with a nearly OUYA sized Steam Machine I really don't think OUYA is going to gain much more ground. If Valve and their hardware partners can pull it off, the lower-end Steam Machines do what the Ouya does better with a much larger library.
@joshwent: There's probably some kind of legal problem with saying "hey, kid, you like stealing old arcade and nintendo games? Get an Ouya! Oh, and those movies you've stolen, it plays them, too!. OUYA!!."
Not sure that's the kind of messaging you need to attract decent developers to the platform either.
I still can't fucking believe this thing got made in the first place. Who the hell thought playing shitty phone games on a TV was appealing?
The impression I got from the reddit polls where the devs were asking people which games they would like to see on the system was that people genuinely thought that the ouya would support the likes of Skyrim/Dragon Age etc, and the devs deliberately didn't do anything to refute them.

Interesting! That would explain a lot, actually. I can understand that people would get hyped for a new, "indie", crowd-sourced/funded AAA-gaming console to rival Microsoft and Sony.
"Ouya made a poor first impressoin..."
So did this article. :(
haha. awesome.

If that's the case, that's hilarious. I knew reddit was dumb, but I had no idea it was that bad.
@joeyravn: the ouya has an ARM CPU in it, and Windows, Mac, Linux and Steam on those platforms all run x86 and you need those things running on the box doing the streaming, so nope, can't stream with this.
Isn't it a bit early for them to release a revised version of the hardware now? I thought they said they're release updates ever year. Whatever...I'll scour my GameStop today to see if the new model is in, but I'm probably not going to notice the difference between the new and old units.

Ohhhhhh. So the OUYA is like the "stick it to the man" rage funded console. Now I get it.
@big_mex: quite possibly the best unboxing video ever. Oh man I watched that a couple times when it came out sighing in relief because I almost backed it.
the white ouya looked so sexy :( can't find it anywhere except ebay for a gorillian dollars.
Patrick found one in a thrift store.

The Ouya makes me so mad for some ill-defined reason!
It's the fact that people take a chance and try to do something differently that really gets to me.
Now all enterprising people out there know better. If you fail or do something not the way the internet wants it, there will be no mercy or clemency.
No compassion until we reach our goal: a total stagnant market where only multinational corporations are allowed. Let us all always disparage or ridicule when the name Ouya is brought up. Never forget how these people failed and let it be a lesson to all!

It's too soon to call this one. They've made plans to do yearly updates of the hardware. If it chugs along quietly along the bottom, that'll be enough of a success in my opinion.

Interesting.
But literally all of them on ebay are 300-400$, for no explained reason except 'rarity'.
pfft.
@noizy: cannibilizing console gaming? I am not buying that at all. You may see a lot of console gamers adopt partciular mobile gaming devices, but not at the cost of console gaming. The vast majority of those gamers will continue to support console gaming. The record launches for both Xbox One and the PS4 should prove that consoles are as popular as ever, even in the light of all of the mobile gaming devices. In fact, the Xbox One and PS4 generation will be the most successful console generation to date.
Yup. Not my claim, but I'm sure you've heard those claims. Even on this very site, and I don't mean by users.

@erhard: going by the number of shitty android consoles currently available or about to become available a whole mess of people. Those other companies won't have the stradivarius of game controllers as a draw so they're obviously bound to fail even worse.
Just because people produce this crap doesn't mean that people want/need this crap.
That's one of the main problems on this planet: People building shit nobody needs and nobody asked for to be build.
All those "Android console"makers believe they will be the next big thing right after "mobile gaming", just like all those companies releasing MMO's following the success of World of Warcraft. But they will end up just like the countless of MMO's: Nobody will buy it, nobody will know it.
I wonder if the Ouya can be turned into a Steam-streaming machine. If so, it can be a suitable option for those interested in having a low-profile machine on their living rooms, for example.
While it's theoretically possible, i seriously doubt it..
The Ouya is using an ARM processor, those are fundamentally different in their architecture compared to x86 CPU's like the ones used in modern consoles/PC's. Performance wise it could probably work, afaik even OnLive has Android/iOS apps for streaming, but it would require Valve to rewrite SteamOS so it's compatible with the ARM architecture.
