I'm curious. How is the "Software" (in the 80gb models) emulation in terms of reliability? I've got a 60gb (which uses hardware for PS2 emulation) from way back when and have only had one PS2 game snag up on me - I was curious (as is  friend of mine who's interested in the PS3) how the 80gb's emulation is....?

Is it hit and miss? Only popular titles? Or smack on with minor flaws?

From what i've heard its really good (my mate has done it with the 80gb). But you might want to get someone to post that has actually used it.

I used it in the euro 60 gig. It has worked for everygame I played. I think that over 95% of PS2 games work now

It uses a mix of hardware and software, but in the future they will be able to run it on software alone.

Alright, that settled. I'm really interested in how it preforms.

The earliest I would expect this to be available for DL, would be late 09, latest... first half of 2011.

So most likely some time in 2010.

I'd say 98% reliable if I was pulling statistics outta my ass. From what I heard it is reliable though.

Well, it works really well. I have an 80g edition, bought it last year. Its good to know that every Firmware has more games added to the list. This means that the 80G will one day achieve close to 100% BC. Its really reliable, works well, except for a handful of games. You can check the list in www.playstation.com and then going to your region, then to support and Backwards Compatibility list and choosing you console and then use the game find to search for the game.

The BC in the 80G and 60G(european) is different from what the 40 has. The 80g and 60GE have both the graphic chip of the PS2, but are missing the other chip of the PS2. That means that the So called Software emulation is actually Partial Software emulation.
For the 40G to have BC, Sony would have to encode each game separately and then patch it 1 by 1. Thats why its a long shot to say that they will add it.

I haven't ran into many problems at all, that I would consider a bad thing. Most problems are with FMV's/Cinematics running at slightly different speeds than on a PS2, which doesn't affect the gameplay.

The new $400 dollar PS3 that will be sold, will they be completly stripped from any BC or will they still be on the same frame of BC and upadating as the current 80 GB PS3?

The new 80G is the old 40G with a new HDD. You will be able to play PSO games, but until they start using if ever online versions of their PS2 titles as they do with their PSO, then you wont be able too.

I was in the Sony Store, in the Metreon - San Francisco, over the weekend, and they still had a few of the MGS4 Bundles.

I'm sure it's still pretty findable, but for how long?

Thanks, I'll get on that ASAP! :D Too bad I just went on the Wallmart site and they don't have the 100 bucks gift card they had when the game just launched. That could have been useful. Oh well, whats done is done.

It's good to hear that the 80gb emulation is top notch, I was thinking it might be less.

But Wow. I bet buying a PS3 now is confusing. With the new 80gb coming out, I bet some people will be buying it thinking they're getting PS2 BC.

Right now, the 60 is not that impressive compared to the old 80. In fact, from the games that I have, and tested, both played the same. Even on the PS BC list you will see that they are almost even now.

Don't forget too guys, with the MSG4 80GB you get a Dualshock3 ($50) for free, as well.

If presented with the choice, today, to get the 60GB for $450 or the MSG4 80GB for $500... I'd get the 80GB one, for sure.

20 more GB, Dualshock3, and MSG4. The BC is supposedly just barely not up to par, but I haven't noticed one bit, and they will keep Patching it to make it better.

The 80 started with less BC than the 60. Over the past months, each FW upgraded its BC, and now they are almost even. Making the effort to find a 60, and even paying more kind of a stupid move.

Yes, which gave it a much better BC list during the first months of the 80. Right now, they are almost in the same place. Just in case if you didnt know, every FW updates the BC list in the 80s, even when the FW doesnt specify such thing.

That its not worthy to either waster time and money looking for a 60Gb unit when the 80g can do it almost as good as the 60.

It will do the job.... and is it REALLY that important? Jesus, who cares to play old games when you have new ones? It is not THAT important. Besides, eventually PS2 games will be offered for download in the PS Store anyways.

Yeah, I bet it's coming too. Sony's just slow with stuff, takes their time and make sure everything is working. Also, they're still making a ton on PS2 disc sales - so maybe they don't see a huge need to rush it :P

Nah it's not about them being slow (well not in this case) its just about the PS2 era dying down a bit more until they can launch a PS2 service on PSN.

That its not worthy to either waster time and money looking for a 60Gb unit when the 80g can do it almost as good as the 60.
    "
I never said that he should get a 60 over an 80 unless he had the choice. I was arguing that hardware is always better the emulation.

I wonder. If the PS3 (via FW update) somehow included ingame XMB for PS2 games.... if the 60gb unit will be "left in the dust"? I've noticed that when ever I load up a PS2 game but TV will loose signal (from HDMI) and display a blue screen for a few secs before I see the PS2 logo and the game start to load. Now, I'm assuming that it's because of the PS2 hardware that's in my 60gb - the PS3 switching over to it to run the game... and if that's the case do you think that implementing ingame XMB will be possible? Just curious, because now with PS3s having no emulation hardware included  and some with software emulation and the possibility to do it entirely software side (thus being included in a FW update for the 40gb / new 80gb models) - if the FW will be built around that idea... is that understandable? Does anyone else think something such as that will happen?

I think it is possible, because the PS button still brings up th PS3 XMB menu.

Ahh yeah, true. So... do you think both are running? Like the PS2 hardware running just for the PS2 emulation (or w/e) and the Cell/RSX keeping that in check, running over it?

I would assume that's how it works.

"Don't forget too guys, with the MSG4 80GB you get a Dualshock3 ($50) for free, as well.

It's a bit hard to find them in local stores but you can probably still get them on Amazon or shipped from another retailer (I saw CircuitCity still had them available online).

The bundle is well worth the 100$ price difference.

It will do the job.... and is it REALLY that important? Jesus, who cares to play old games when you have new ones? It is not THAT important. Besides, eventually PS2 games will be offered for download in the PS Store anyways.

Same here man.  When I got my PS3 I thought I was going to be playing my PS2 games a lot on it but I find that I might play one once every few months.  Although it is nice to have just to know that if I want to play a PS2 game I can.

I still play PS2 games. Granted a lot of the action games I thought I might play I really don't but, RPGs and other unique games I like to give a go here and there. Picking up old "missed" games is a bonus too. But I don't think BC is necessarily for everyone.
