This is actualy a serious question: Is there any kind of red ring or something when it stops working or does it just stop?

I downloaded the new firmware like a day ago.

Does your PS3 start up at all?

I had a similar problem while playing MGS4 but it seems it was happening in a certain segment of the game, plus mine would start back up, after it had shut off and started blinking red.

The green light comes on for like a second or 2, and then it just shuts off and the red light starts blinking.

Hmm. Thats harsh dude. I honestly hope that it's something FW related... cuz that would prob be better than hardware failure. Sony didn't have any remedies for you besides send it in?

If it was Firmware related, Sony would not make the customer pay, that would be entirely their fault. Just like when they pulled firmware 2.4, the people who had their consoles brick on them were not required to pay because the firmware update was corrupt for some people."

I'm not saying hardware failure isn't their fault. There is failure with every console, PS3 just happens to have a low fail rate. The only thing way that Sony will fix consoles for free is if it's still in warranty or if it is proved to be firmware related. If enough people have trouble with their PS3 after this firmware update, they will investigate it.

Also, it could potentially be the fault of the customer. We don't know where he kept it, if it was given proper air flow, or how long he keeps it on, etc.

Welcome to the fucking club dude! My friend sent me a friend request, I accepted, and screen goes blank. This is the SECOND TIME COD4 has broken my PS3. Once I get my new one I'll get to 55 1st prestige (54 right now and only need a little more EXP left), then I'm done with the COD franchise forever. I don't have a warrenty from Best Buy, and my 1st year of having a PS3 is almost out. I can't take any risks.

same thing happened to me when cod4 came out but mine wouldnt even turn on but since lbp got delayed you will probably have it back before it comes out.
