I have an extra power cable for my PS3 slim that I take on the road with me (saves time). Given the slim and the 4 both hav an internal power brick, will the cable work with the PS4? Am I risking frying my brand new shiny console?

According to Gamestop extra power cables will not be available day one.

It's just a cable. It should be perfectly fine. If it were a power brick like the XBO I would say no.
