The Last of Us is 2013's Red Dead Redemption.

Nah, Red Dead had to go up against Mass Effect 2. I have a feeling that Last of Us is going to end up winning it out this year because everyone seems to range from like to love on it besides Jeff and there's really no strong competition.

Uhh c'mon.. DmC came out this year. Clearly, GOTY, best Devil May Cry in the series by far.

Sigh. Is The Last of Us going to get the shaft during the GOTY discussions because of Jeff?

Nah, if anything I think that The Last of Us is probably one of the games that the crew could most likely agree on (especially since Brad ended up quite enjoying it). If that doesn't win it then it'll probably be either Mario or Zelda, with Zelda probably being more likely since it seems like everybody but Jeff has played that (unless I'm forgetting) and enjoyed it but only some of them have played Mario.

Is it just me or does Squarespace and Stamps.com sponser like every podcast? I was also waiting for an onnit ad after

It's worked for me. Even though I don't actually use Squarespace, I sure do have that ad speech memorized in case I need to use it in a podcast of my own in the future.

I've found FM transmitters to be fine for in car audio. I'm in Birmingham, UK which is the second biggest city in England so it's not like I don't have to deal with crowded air waves. The trick isn't too look for an empty channel, you want to be right on the very edge of a strong one (for example I tune into BBC Radio 2 and then fine tune out until it starts to sound shitty) because then you should be able to blast over the top of it.

We have national radio stations here which have the same frequency nationwide so it tends to work everywhere if you are on the road for a couple of hundred miles. Dunno how that translates stateside, but you certainly should try being on the edge of a big station of you have an FM transmitter collecting dust.

I'm so happy Brad liked the Last Of Us. The things he said about it are pretty much exactly my opinion of the game, even though I think I liked it more than him. It's just nice to hear one of these guys saying the things you've been thinking about for a while now.

I wonder if it's going to be another year of Brad pushing Last of Us real hard, Vinny kinda arguing against but finally caving in, Drew recalling a story about hiking and Jeff just going along with it since he decided to not play it to completion.

What a season.

Jeff needs to come up with better criticism than "I just didn't enjoy playing it". At least try to analyze what about it you're not enjoying.

The issue Brad is talking about with not being able to sneak up on infected is the enemies he's talking about aren't infected. I can't remember exactly what they're called but they're a specific enemy type I can't remember what they're called but they're sort of between infected and a clicker in that they have the super sharp hearing but also still have the agility of the regular infected.

Why? He didn't enjoy the gameplay. That's fair enough. And it's not really surprising, with a few exceptions (MGS 4, Mark of the Ninja comes to mind), Jeff has never liked stealth gameplay in games.

I guess it's a good thing that past the first few hours, The Last of Us never ever demands Stealth gameplay and many times makes it impossible to do so.

Yeah, I'm mainly talking about the first part of the game, where Jeff gave up. Personally, I really like the story of that game, but I got tired of the actual gameplay pretty fast. I can't explain why, but the gameplay just never really grabbed me. Still, I liked the story enough to finish the game, and that ending...

TLoU will still be high on their GOTY list I think, Patrick and Brad will fight for it. I'm almost starting to believe that Zelda might win GOTY. Patrick and Brad loves it, the others seem to really like it. A handheld as GB GOTY would be really cool.

I broke into laughter on that reference, that was the first song I wanted on vinyl after building a collection (for the sake of music making with, and pleasure of listening) and I'm very happy that I eventually found it at a thrift shop.

I feel like nothing will ever live up to the great Uncharted vs Batman debate. SR3/Skyrim came close but the outcome was more obvious there.

The 70s definitely didn't have the best audio equipment. And STAMPS

What decade do you think spawned the best hi-fi gear?

I'd say the '70's is a contender, because of things like:

  • Linn Sondek LP12 turntable started production in 1972 and spawned the template for high fidelity turntable design.
  • SME tonearms created the industry standard for tonearm and head-shell mountings in the 3009 and 3012 mk II and III arms.
  • John Linsley Hood's Class A amplification design, first published in 1969 in an electronics mag, really caught on in the 1970's because of suitable power transistor availability. Class A topology is still used in many high-end power amps.
  • Speaker drivers from Tannoy and KEF were available for the DIY market and included in many high end speakers from various manufacturers, like IMF and Rogers. They were also specified as an audio standard set by the BBC.

Listening to a set-up using components from the above would objectively surpass most modern-day equipment in terms of frequency response, distortion mitigation and sound pressure levels achieved.

Video games are super serious business, didn't you know?

From a quality standpoint, I think both of them were a fitting part of that tragedy. In that regard they were fantastic. Geoff was like a stereotypical image of the soulless video games man who throws around the word "epic" left and right (he was also wearing like 6 layers of clothing indoors without dying, so he must be a robot) and Joel (un)intentionally fucked up just about everything and made things incredibly awkward. Not to mention the outdoors stage... I don't even... So if you like beautiful train wrecks from which you can't look away then this is the perfect show for you.

As far as I can remember the VGA's were always shitty and embarrassing and despite the changes, it's still the same. The video games industry already has a dozen shameful parts, we don't need an organized one. Although I have to admit, it was fascinating to watch.

I've been listening to Howard Stern for a long time and feel like his Sirius years are a little more captivating than his old over-the-air days. Still, good call on the Stern PPV you got Jeff, that was a great show.

Regarding the differences in sound quality between the wave from the outer edge of an LP vs. that from the inner edge: in an old issue of Ice Newsletter, Elton John's producer during the '70s talked about how the last songs on each side -- the ones you would want to have the most "oomph" -- would comparatively suffer since they didn't have as much of a dynamic range as the earlier songs.

Since the "right" difficulty level to play The Last of Us on comes up so frequently in discussion, I think that's a design problem. It feels like it was designed around the Hard difficulty level, while Normal and Easy were an afterthought. Maybe it could have guided users to that optimal play-through by just making the hard difficulty called "normal" and have the easy difficulty as "story".

However, I also don't buy the argument that you can play a game on Easy just to "see the story" especially for this game where how harrowing the encounters are factors into the desperate tone of the narrative. Unless you're replaying a game, nut up and go for a challenging difficulty.

@mrgtd: he liked the story but didn't really love the gameplay which is how I felt about it - and a Game of the Year should be the full package. I think Vinny might have enjoyed playing a game more this year than Last of Us but who knows, I'm not Vinny (sadly!)

I definitely agree with Vinny. I found that The Last of Us is in a level where it is genuinely good beyond the videogame denomination... I feel it is relentlessly mature, not in a tits and guts god of war splatter kind of way, but in a confidence in the message it wants to convey.

Also, unlike most movies (or most mainstream media in general ), it is not scared to delve in profoundly dark topics without a clear cut good outcome.

I also like how the gameplay enhances that lack of game-like affectation, it might sometimes feel too messy, but it gives it the frantic quality that makes perfect sense to the story that it's telling.

Brad has a point though, I feel that TLOU is it's weakest when it is more like a game. The endless ammo sniper section, the OCD collectibles and the monster closets.. things that would be perfectly fine in any game, tend to really disrupt the impressive pacing, the immersion and the narrative impact.

I'm a bit disappointed that Jeff can't get over his dislike for the stealth in the game ( mainly because I thought it was pretty well handled compared to other games)... but after his hatred for majora's mask... (and then he's into peggle?) I'm thinking I simply don't get what the hell goes on in Jeff's head.

I suppose things for him have to be slightly "dumb".

Hah, Vinnie and Drew are so funny XD.

@drewbert Hearing you mention "Russian Spanish" reminds me that the other day I was playing Assassin's Creed IV, and during a mission filled with a lot of Portuguese soldiers, I also thought their speech sounded like Russian Spanish, so I'm going to say it was probably Portuguese you heard.

It's important note that Patrick will also be in SF for the podcasts and if it's like last year (and I'm sure it will be) Alex will be Skyped in as well for the final GOTY decision. Both of them are big proponents of The Last of Us. As for Vinny, he's kind of a wild card. I'm not sure if there's any game that he's going to argue for over The Last of Us.
