Valkyria, Valkyria Bless and protect our fertile land

Valkyria, Valkyria
May the bloodline live forever
Valkyria, Valkyria Bless and protect our fertile land

~Excerpt from the Anthem of the Dutchy of Gallia

So I finally got around to beating Valkyria Chronicles today and what can I say? If you're into strategy games, anime or World War II games then this is the game for you. Primarily an action-strategy-RPG game, Valkyria Chronicles shows a surprising amount of depth and artistic license. The game focuses on Welkin Gunther and his command of Squad 7 in the Gallian militia. Primarily a tale of love and life during a time of war, the game paints an surprisingly detailed world giving both sides of the conflict an equal chance to show their own reasons for fighting. The story is heavily anime influenced with a lot of archetypes of characters represented so be warned that if you hate anime and everything it stands for, this might be a huge negative. The art style is unique that is uses a sort of pencil coloring technique (along with some cell shading) that may take a bit to get used to but ultimately makes the world stand out.

The narrative is presented using a storybook format where the 'chapters' are composed of several cinematics scenes coupled with 1-2 battles. What makes the narrative compelling for me is that at the start of the game the book is nearly empty. As you play, biographies are completed, entries about the world give more deprth and meaning to the conflict and very few elements of the story appear forced. Using a pseudo-World War II as a backdrop the game strikes an interesting boundry in presenting slave labor camps and war attrocities against a specific ethnic group the Darcsens. Now mind you, as a video game, the narrative never goes too far indepth to show you the true horrors of war but even their slightly toned down version is a step in the right direction for presenting a more realistic portrayl of war in video games.

Now what makes the narrative so strong (at least for myself) is that by spending so much time building up characters and presenting the world is that you gain a better understanding for your squadmates. Building these relationships is key as characters (aside from plot specific characters) can die during battle. By building that strong relationship in terms of backstory, you begin to not treat you squad as expendible cannon fodder but as people who can live or die under your command. With the exception of a few scripted deaths, the rest of cast is yours to control and it's ultimately your decisions that will decide their fate. Trust me, there's nothing more heartbreaking than building up a character, reading their backstory only to get kthem killed in battle.

Gameplay is phase based between your squad and enemy. However, during your turn (or the enemy's) you are allowed to control the real time movement of your team with only brief pauses for attacks. Strategy plays a key role as placing your units as they will be able to suppress (ie. attack units within their vision radius) enemy units during the enemy phase. Here once again, while you have several classes of squad member to use, their personalities comes through with each member excelling with their own bonuses and negatives. Their relationships with other characters also play a role in allowing extra attacks or other bonuses when being used. If there is a fault with the gameplay (and what truely hampers the game from being excellent) is that the game only really grades you on the completion time of the mission (although small bonuses for eliminating enemy aces and tanks are given). Yet at the same time, neither action nor strategy are overwhelming to the user or entirely necessary to master the game.

The length of the game is fair at about 18 chapters, plus 6 unlockable bonus missions. As an added note, Sega of America has confirmed that DLC of 2 mission packs and 1 enhanced difficulty setting are coming this Spring. A word of warning though, there are a lot of short cinemas per chapter which means that sometimes you spend a lot of time watching before the next battle. The story may not be surprising but what it does present is done well and not over the top.

If you make some time to play Valkyria Chronicles I honestly think you'll be rewarded with one of better games of 2008. An interesting narrative and setting along with a good gameplay backbone makes this a good strategy-action-rpg for the PS3 (rpgs especially are few on the PS3 to begin with). You may have missed this gem the first time but do your part and join the Gallian Militia today!

Canada's Top 5 roles in Video Games

In the anime Gundam Seed Destiny the province of Quebec is destroyed by falling space colony debris. In the television show Heroes, the city of Montreal, Quebec was hinted at playing a great role in the storyline (way to drop the ball on that guys, really you couldn't even get decent stock footage of Montreal?). But what about video games? Well from whipping boy to boy giving the whipping, Canada has seen it all. Let's take a look:

5. Fallout Univserse

In the Fallout Universe Canada would be annexed by the United States of America following the Chinese invasion of Alaska. Forever the whipping boy, Canadian protests are ignored and dissent in Canada is treated harshly (see image). But as 'War never changes' perhaps it's best to start with the worst role.

4. Battlefield 1942
No Caption Provided

You're crazy, you say? Canada did not appear in Battlefield 1942. Well, you are correct. In the original realease Canada did not have any role in Battefield 1942. However, with the popularity of the game came patches featuring new maps and finally in patch 1.6 The Battle of Caen was added featuring Canadian forces and the Johnson M1941 LMG. This would not be Canada's last role in a WWII video game...

3. Call of Duty 3

Ok so probably the lowest point of the main Call of Duty series, Call of Duty 3 features several nations trying to close the Falaise Gap including Canada. Following the Canadian 4th Armoured Division and featuring one of the worst commanding officers in Call of Duty history Lieutenant Robichard, the Canadian campaign is a mix of on rails segments and assaults against heavily armed German positions. While a fun game (on easier difficulties) the Canadian campaign falters at the end due to some haphazard story presentation and buggy gameplay.

2. Red Alert 2

While not part of the main story, Canada plays an important role in Command and Conquer Red Alert 2. The Soviet Union invades the United States of America using psychic technology and their armed forces. Following an American retreat from Washington D.C., the President and the Joint Chiefs are forced to relocate to Canada. Using a base on the Canadian side of Lake Michigan the Americans launch an attack on Chicago to destroy a Psychic Amplifier deployed by Soviet forces. The amplifier is destroyed and the Soviets nuke the city in response. This gives the American President  the chance he needs to open a dialog with the European Allies and thus change the course of the war. A little later in the campaign the American General Carville would form his plans to retake Washington from his base in Canada.

1. Civilization Series

Perhaps Canada's greatest role in a video game series ever would be in the Civilization series. Featuring a Canadian tribe in Civilization 2, Canada would finally get a chance to take over the world! Civilization II still features the most Tribes (in the base game) of all the main Civilizatoin game releases and while Canada would be featured in scenario maps or mods in the future, nothing would ever beat being recognized as a full fledged Tribe. But for those who would rather live history rather than change it HistoicCanada features a full Civilization 3 mod that allows you to play early Canadian history as either the French, the English or several native tribes to decide the fate of the New World in just one more turn.

Dis-honorable Mention:
Syphon Fliter: The Omega Strain

Ok let's talk about the storied history of Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain. Originally the game would feature a series of stages either set in Quebec (probably Montreal, more on that later) or Toronto depending which source you read. Now the year was 2003 and the world was still on edge because of the invasion of Iraq and terrorism was still on the mind of many. Pressure from both Ontario and Quebec forced Sony to 'remove' the level. And for those who knew about the story this was enough. The game came out and everyone was happy. But the opening stages of Carthage, Michigan contain a sinister secret. The 3 'Carthage' opening stages are the original Toronto/Quebec stages reworked a bit. Mail boxes still resemble Canada Post mailboxes and perhaps most condemning is a map of the Montreal Metro system that can be found throughout the first stage (take a right after starting the first Carthage stage and look for the white map near the staircase and garage). So now you know the dirty secret of Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain. Let's just keep it a secret between you, me and Canada.

Trophy Card

Trophies are awesome like that. You get one, then you just have to get another and another. Kind of like Xbox achievements...
