I loved the original Baldur's Gate, and BG2 is a much better, more refined and expansive game. The Bioware/Black Isle D&D games amazingly took the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons rules and made them comprehensible.
I didn't enjoy FPS multiplayer until this game. Tons of variety, great maps, well-implemented modes. Rewards competent play, but there's also fun to be had for the unskillful and lucky.
I didn't play Half-Life 2 until The Orange Box came out for the 360, and I was amazed at not only how well it held up despite being a couple of years old but how it was better than any of the other shooters I'd played that year (BioShock, Halo 3, CoD4). Engaging story, amazing final levels. Entering the Spire was an awe-inspiring experience for me.
I bought this game with a portion of the money I got back by returning an engagement ring to the jeweler. I love this game more than that ex.
