It's probably a good thing DP was on the 360 because it was the developer's first ever game for that console and it gave them a lot of technical problems.  DP was kind of their 360 bootcamp and it sounds like they got a ton of experience from it, which means sequel/prequels ought to be vastly improved in all the areas people complained about.  Also what everyone else said about the marketing and all.

What if it was on a handheld though?  There was a hopeful but scant rumor going around that a 3DS port wasn't out of the question; I don't think it'll happen anytime soon but that might make more sense than a Wii while bringing it to a Nintendo platform.  I would totally but a 3DS if DP was on it.

Plus imagine reading fortunes in your coffee mug... IN 3-DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

One thing I can say for sure, this trend of claiming to know why OTHER PEOPLE enjoy this game is possibly the dumbest thing ever, either that or the haters are actually psychic and can read my mind.  Apparently, subconsciously, I only like DP because Giant Bomb did an Endurance Run of it even though I only disocvered the ERs AFTER playing the game!  Forget FK in the coffee, these guys are the real clairvoyants.  I would applaud your telepathic abilities if my hands weren't clawing my face in a parody of the painting "The Scream".

It doesn't really matter though because it's fairly obvious 65% of the people on this board are only reading the title of the OP and nothing else, posting once and then never coming back, so it's probably futile to respond to most of them individually.

EDIT: Beaten.  Although I see it as yet another testament to DP's awesomeness that it riles narrow-minded people up without half trying.  I hope these little discussions continue long into the new year and beyond.

So I think AW won, big surprise.  But that was just a minor skirmish in a long-term war, in which DP will emerge victorious.  Honestly, ten years from now, I don't think there's any question of which game will be remembered more fondly.  Even if it's just the fact that DP actually has hardcore "fans" willing to go to absurd lengths to expound on their love of the game, while AW mainly has "people who played it and generally liked it".

Now, while I wouldn't kick either game out of bed for crackers, there's only one I'd invite back to dinner.  Alan Wake, I enjoyed the brief time we spent together, but you were definitely a one-night stand (not to be confused with the Stephen King novel).  Agent York, on the other hand, is welcome to crash on the couch any time.  (Seriously, which sounds more enjoyable: Talking about 80's flicks and punk rock with York or listening to Wake read from his godawful manuscript pages?  Yeah.  I thought so.)

How do you mean?  Are you looking at the thread post or Planet REDWOOD itself?

If it's the thread post I recommend going here, the OP hasn't been updated in months.

C'mon guys, it's a game destined for cult status.  I wouldn't expect stuff like Rocky Horror Picture Show or Donnie Darko to win any Oscars even if they're a million times more entertaining than friggin' Cold Mountain.   As for some of the games being compared to DP in terms of "better stories"... Enslaved?  RDR?  Starcraft II???  Maybe we should talk about which has a more appealing color, apples or oranges.   DP offers players like me a lot of things those mainstream games could never accomplish, so I don't get why the majority opinion is somehow seen as "objective reality".  I thought gamers were all anti-elitism and everything, so this discussion is baffling to me.

It's like listening those people who want every single movie to be directed by Christopher Nolan.  Good grief.

I can't believe those pictures still haven't been updated.  Weird since they're from 2007; you'd think they would have found more recent ones.  George looks more like Richard.

As mentioned: Seriously what is with York's teeth in that screenshot?  They look parted and slightly pointy.  The longer I stare at it the less sense it makes.

Yeah, I added that to the guide at some point.  It confused me too when it first happened.  Also if you use the Radio, it'll leave you with the last car you were driving before you quick-traveled.

It's okay, I'm sure SWERY understands.  It's the thought that counts, right Zach?

Good point on the distinction between "controls" and "gameplay", though.  Huge difference.  DP has some great gameplay, it's just so tied in with the narrative that people get it confused with "story" and "atmosphere".  Gameplay isn't just interface and aiming systems, it's whatever it is that makes a game a game- and DP has plenty of those elements that really add to the overall feel of the experience.  Finding a plate of smoked salmon on a bloody toilet is gameplay.  The one sequence where that music plays- gameplay.  Running into Ushah at the Milk Barn and listening to him talk about potato chips- if that's not gameplay, I don't know what is.

IGN UK knows where it's at.

It's not nearly as incompetent as people here seem to think it is, either.  There's a difference between a developer genuinely having no clue how to put a game together and a developer with a small budget whose enthusiasm got so far ahead of what they thought the 360 was capable of that they had to make do with the resources they had.  I find that a lot more noble and inspiring than the more experienced studios sitting on heaps of cash whose idea of art direction is "throw money into the polygons until it looks like a live-action Spielberg movie", and a trillion times more interesting to boot.

Continuing with the film comparison, if I tried to say low-budget robot film X was "objectively bad" because "the cinematography and special effects weren't as good as Transformers 2" even though the smaller movie's story and overall experience were infinitely better, there is no way anyone would take you seriously.  The problem is there's nothing to compare DP to yet because the games industry is not Hollywood; there isn't the flexibility to handle games of every size, shape and color, churned out at the whims of the individual, so something like DP sticks out like a sore thumb.  There are thousands of movies that give similar experiences to DP, just under the radar of mainstream Hollywood, and nobody begrudges those products a devoted audience.

Someday, when the games industry is a little more prolific and varied with the products they offer, the community will wise up.  Hopefully.  If this doesn't happen, I'll continue to look at other mediums for entertainment, because any industry that doesn't support something as interesting as DP obviously doesn't need my patronage.
