Game of the Year 2015

I came to the console game relatively recently. I got a 360 in 2012 which had the benefit of a massive backlog of games that my BootCamp equipped MacBook couldn’t handle (basically anything newer than '08 unless it was an indy, or I wanted to play on the lowest settings possible at sub-30 FPS). That was an awesome way to play games fresh out of high school since used copies of the all-time greats were deeply discounted.

It wasn’t quite the same way when I got a PS4 at the end of 2014. The ability to play what was new and in demand was great but 2014 was a bit of a lukewarm launch for both next-gen machines which meant I didn’t have as deep (or inexpensive) a collection to pull from. I lucked out in two ways; first, I got a job that helped me stay in school and also left some cash over to buy new games, and second, the games I played this year stole massive amounts of time from me.

This year has me psyched to see what else will come out once the generation settles in. So far, so good!

I still remember feeling nervous posting my first lists. I’ve always been a lurker so when I decided to write a little game of the year list in 2015 It existed solely in a TextEdit file. When I got around to my second list in 2016 I decided to upload the old list to the site alongside it and I felt like I was really branching out and doing something gutsy (I don’t know if that’s more hilarious or embarrassing in hindsight).

What I hadn’t done at the time was write a single thing about the games I liked in 2015. Sure I’d written a thin deck for the list, but there wasn’t much in the way of context for every entry. In the games drought of summer ‘22 I’ve been playing through many of these games since the intervening 7.5 years have given me enough space to forget the details. I thought I might expand on the entries in a retrospective context.
