@neoepoch: That seriously surprised me too. I looked into those, Descent, EVE Online, Star Wars Galaxies, and a bunch of others. Kinda odd that they didn't include some of the forefathers of the space genre.
@Zaph: It's a sequel. It starts with S, but does not begin with "Space". For an even easier hint, check out Metiphis' profile, it's listed on there somewhere. :O
I just got it too. Honestly, it was a really...esoteric choice for a "RPG cliches" monster. I would've picked something like orcs or wraiths or something far before I would've thought of <SPOILER>.
Sounds more like a "D&D Cliche Monsters" list than an "RPG cliche monsters" list.
Square wouldn't bother publishing a game in an IP they don't own, especially considering all subsequent releases of Breath of Fire 1 (Game Boy Advance port, Virtual Console release, etc) have been published by Capcom.
All Square did with BoF1 was translate it. They have no rights to the franchise, and they definitely had nothing to do with Breath of Fire 2. There's no benefit for them in publishing Capcom's IP in the west, especially when said IP is essentially dead already. They have enough RPG franchises of their own, why would they bother with trying to revive someone else's IP when said IP isn't even financially viable? Hell, Capcom doesn't even want to touch Breath of Fire anymore because they know it won't sell.
And generally, when a major project is finished, the developers take a few months before starting their next game. Especially a small team like Tri-Ace, they don't really have the staff to immediately jump from RoF into a Valkyrie Profile sequel.
