Grenade Spam: from a player's perspective

In light of the recent Battlefield: Bad Company 2 ad. The following is a clip of RD Volx who used to play Battlefield 2 and was in the top 10 of the ladder. I think he stopped playing because dolphin diving got nerfed a while back, no one knows for sure maybe he just got bored and moved on.

The death of Crab Spies within sight?

Valve has just fixed a graphical glitch for the Scout in TF2. The glitch is when the scout tries to double jump and crouch, the scout's legs go all rubbery. And it is now fixed. I actually never minded, it actually sort of made scouts more menacing, like wasps. However, something I do mind is crab spies, especially when half the server isn't actually playing the game just to stare and guffaw at this one spy who is practically afk. Granted, this doesn't happen regularly and I have no problem with crab spies or other shenanigans during setup, but at least to me, it has gone the way of the overused joke.

Dedicated Servers (Article link) and my thoughts

 http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/experienced-points/6768-Its-the-End-of-the-War-as-We-Know-It

The article touches on MW2 not supporting dedicated servers on the PC. It made me realize why some free FPS games like War Rock and Combat Arms really suck, because they don't have dedicated servers and as such cheating is more likely to occur.

I had wanted to buy CoD4 in the past but decided not to. I was mostly afraid that my computer couldn't run it. The computer I'm using right now is still running windows 2000, but runs TF2 and other games fairly smoothly at a lower resolution. I still play TF2 whenever I can, it's still fun as hell. But now whenever I see new FPS games coming out I ask myself a few questions... "Can I run this on my PC?" "If not, is it worth it getting it on the console and having to learn a new control scheme?" The answers are usually no. I am just way too comfortable using my mouse and keyboard.

This past summer I had actually  downloaded and play the demo for Battlefield 1943. It was mad fun. As a BF2 vet, I felt right at home driving around, capping points and killing the enemy. It was all very nostalgic. However I decided not to buy it for 2 reasons. 1. Having to learn to play FPS on a console and 2. My parents hate paying for things online.

Like it says in the article, there's no way of knowing where PC gaming is going we can only wait and hope for the best. I don't know when my dad will finally upgrade all the computers to Windows 7, or install new hardware. Or maybe in the near future I will concede and switch to the console forever. Who knows? I don't, but in the mean time I'll try having fun with the stuff I have.

No hype for RPGs anymore?

Maybe it's me, but there doesn't seem to be much hype for Role Playing Games anymore. I haven't played Fallout 3 but supposedly it is one of the best and latest RPG out there. But whenever I look at it I just dismiss it as another single player First Person Shooter. Recently, Borderlands has struck me as interesting because it was inspired by the Diablo series' loot system, but I would never call it an RPG. Sure you can say that every game is a "role-playing" game, because you take on the role of a character that is not yourself and go on an adventure or do stuff inside an alternate universe. Myself having roots in Final Fantasy, I suppose I've come to limit my definition of an RPG to only encompass Japanese RPGs.

I only just realized that I've been limiting myself in this way and was never really aware of the divide between american RPGs and japanese RPGs. After trying to find a definition of RPGs I wound up on wikipedia and there's a whole page dedicated to "Cultural difference in role-playing video games" which I now feel compelled to read!

P.S. I wasn't sure whether to stick with "hype". Because what I was actually thinking of at the time was the media coverage of JRPGs. I thought about switching it to "love" but that would be incorrect because there are people who love RPGs. To say there was no love means I think everyone has a particular taste in games, which I do not believe. Everyone should play whatever games they want.

Come to think of it, the reason we don't get JRPG coverage is because they're probably only covered on japanese gaming website. I don't know it just occured to me...

money, relative value

$15 a month for a game, no.
$25 a month for a cell phone, no.
$12 for a movie, no.
$7 to eat out a few times a month, okay.
$60 for a game every half year, okay.
$12 000 a year for school, okay... wait what?

dam school is expensive... sort of feels like i'm cheating my parents by not trying hard enough or when there's a jewish holiday and over half the class doesn't come to school when I do and the teacher doesn't teach and i feel really lame.  money...ugh.

somehow i never thought it would happen

But i got hacked. (Guild Wars account). I no longer play the game anymore, but it got hacked, all my valuble stuff and in0game currency was taken. my characters are still in tact, haven't went through all of them though.

I'm no longer active on the game, so i don't really care, but it's sort of depressing to see hundreds of hours accumulated stuff go to waste. This happened before though, when i used to play Runescape, I got hacked and I stopped playing. Recently I sort of played every now and then, but This..... oh well really.

I can't imagine who it might be. Maybe some administrator on a guild wars forum or other game forums that i had to give my email address to. I'm now changing my passwords to all the sites/forums that i still care about (i don't visit Guild Wars forums anymore, so i don't care to change those).  Or maybe it was when I signed up to for a trial of some game, and no longer play it... don't really care.

as much as i hate having to remember and enter so many different passwords all the time, i guess i'll have to. more annoying than anything really.

also might sned something to NCsoft support... whatever. **EDIT** nvm they don't reimburse on lost stuff.

just realized it could be anyone who knows my e-mail and has access to my password (like a forum admin).

Sore Thumbs: a newbie's tale

I GOT SF4 EARLIER TODAY YAAAAYYY. So this is I think what will get me into fighting games. I have the old street fighter 2 for the snes, but never really got into it (also because I was so young).

So first day! I sunk in about 3 hours already, probably will play some more later tonight. So i jumped into Arcade, Easy with Ryu and got beaten by Dhalsim. I spent some time in Training mode and remembered how to fireball. Went back to arcade and beat 3 people until I lost to Rufus (I think i might main him, but it's still too early to tell). Decided to try out the Normal trials. I did the first 3 trials before it got too hard. Hey i got a few new titles, I equipped "Sleeps Anywhere" hehe. I went ahead and did the first 2 trials for Ken, Chun-Li, Rufus and C. VIper. I really didn't like playing with Chun-Li, Ken feels like Ryu, Rufus is hilarious, C. Viper is cool. So I went back into arcade with Ryu and won a few rounds then I kept getting beaten by Abel and that's about when I decided to call it quits.

I think I need to work on moving the analog stick more accurately (like instead of doing a quarter circle for a hadouken, I sometimes do a third circle) and timing for combos. I still don't know what to do in many situations, I find myself hoping to get off more fireballs and concerned with inputting the right commands, then BAM I get thrown or knocked down.

So! mmmm.... what are the chances I can win a round online? xD haha I'll probably get around to reading the guides on giantbomb. hmm well any advice is appreciated >.> " I have it on the PS3, errr... yeah... sore thumbs. ^_^

This article made me say "YES"

 http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation/6432-Extra-Punctuation-Splosion-Man

here's an excerpt from the article if your unfamiliar with "Yahtzee":

"

There's something unpleasantly cynical about 'Splosion Man's presentation. It's 'wacky' in a very hollow, calculated fashion. The references to internet and pop culture memes extend beyond the cake and Portal business - I'm fairly certain the main character occasionally yells 'GET TO DA CHOPPA,' and one of the later bosses parrots the phrase 'FOR SCIENCE,' which are both the kinds of nerd-culture catch-phrases that become annoying within days and wincingly painful the moment you hear them outside of being superimposed onto a picture of a startled cat. And then people who never mentally grew past the age of 15 say things like "THIS IS THE AWESOMEST THING EVER. IT'S SOOO RANDOM."

Yes, random is funny, isn't it? Sometimes I set up a random number generator when I need a good laugh. Get this: First there was a three, and now there's a nine. I'm like, whoa! That's not the number that comes after three! My thighs are now thoroughly tenderized from all the slapping.
"

PS3 is now connected to internet!

Pretty anti-climactic actually. I figured out how to turn on the wireless router. I made a PSN account and updated Burnout Paradise. Any suggestions for demos or games to buy through PSN? I am still really excited for Fat Princess.

where were you when you heard he died?

I was in the midst of a round of Team Fortress 2. Someone on the server was name "MICHEAL JACKSON'S SPIRIT". I didn't quite get it, but then someone else asked "So who else is happy that Micheal Jackson is dead?" Then I thought, "huh?" Other people started asking whether he's actually dead, and they confirmed. After accepting the fact I asked myself "Would I have wanted him dead? o.O" The answer was no. I mean, he's still a dude and like Ryan said his impact on music is evident despite the last decade or so of his life. So.. rest in peace i guess.

P.S. Now Perez Hilton... okay, maybe not dead.. but tortured into insanity or something like that. Or maybe until he loses his voice from screaming for help too much.
