Is Giant Bomb's Influence Growing?

I love Giant Bomb. What drew me to it was how unigue it was. Having been on Gamespot for years I was ready for something new. The personality in the writing, the great staff, and my favorite the video content. The quick looks were what changed the game for me. Seeing a game in its most pure form, without all the PR and bias of video previews on other sites. Call me naive, but I thought this would keep Giant Bomb different from other gaming sites for a long time. Now Gamespot and Destructoid have each launched there own video series that show the first ten minutes of a game being played with commentary by editors. Sound Familar. I dont find any problems with this, but it is obvious that other sites are paying attention to Giant Bomb and emulating some of it's best features. What I am wondering is "Do you think Giant Bomb is losing what made it standout in the first place?" and "Do you think that Giant Bomb's style of journalism will become the new norm for gaming sites?" Feedback appreciated

Imitation is the purest form of flattery. The other websites see something that works and naturally try to emulate it. What they don't have is the personalities that make it so good.

Do I think GB is losing what made it standout in the first place? That depends on what reasons you come to the website. The guys who run it are my reasons, and so long as they are here I am too.  And I think their form of journalism is no different than anyone elses. Reviewing games is not easy because no matter what YOU may feel when playing it, someone else may not. It's a double-edged sword. There's always haters, regardless of the rating of a game.

Just keep in mind, they can copy all they want but they are missing the most important factors - Jeff, Ryan, Brad, Vinny & sometimes Dave. ;)

I don't feel it, but then again, I'm a one-website guy. I've tried managing accounts on other websites, but it's never worked out.

Nah, what made Giant bomb stand out in the first place was the people behind the website . The personalities of Ryan, Jeff, Vinny, and Brad are what kept me coming back (as well as getting me interested in videogame podcasts.  So while other sites may try to offer similar video content, they can't recreate the awesomeness of the Giant Bomb staff. Often imitated, never duplicated...Giant Bomb FTW!!1

There is definitely some influence going around. The "Quick Look"-esque features and countless mentions of the ER are only good things for the site. However, I do not think they are losing their special something, as all the videos the guys make now are still full of personality. I would like to see more office vids and some new feature to rival ER and TANG, but I am content for now (and also extremely busy). But if GB starts becoming a standard for other sites, than they have a fine example to follow.

This is far too true. In honesty, I never looked at Giant Bomb because it essentially formed out of Gamespot, which I hated. I hated their site layout, bias, etc... (which is why I never visited there that much). But about a year ago a friend with very similar interests showed me site proper. Whilst it was about news ( to a certain extent) it was news I was interested in, but more importantly it was news that mattered to me, and kept a fun, entertainment edge to it.

This is what no other website could possibly achieve. A fantastic balance between information and fun, whilst actually engaging with the community at all times. Given Giant Bomb's short life so far, and it's obvious success, I can see why other sites would want to flatter them via imitation, but you'll never beat the best, nor the original.

I don't think GB is "losing" what makes them unique simply because other websites are beginning to emulate those features. GB still has those features, you know.

No other website could possibly emulate Giant Bomb entirely. They might steal some of our features, jokes and things like that, but they can never steal what really makes this site so great, and that is the community. It's a great community if you ask anyone around here. Sure, there are trolls, but we get around it. Sure we act like dicks sometimes too, but we are understanding.

If other sites learn from Giantbomb then that's just great.
it just shows that this site has something great going for it (who was wondering?)
So in my eyes they're not "losing" anything by this.
The crew, the charm, everything is still here and will always be here.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If you can't beat them, join them (or do something like them so it seems like you've joined them)

To be fair, I think 1Up Game Night was the first to do something like this.
