Orbital rendezvous is, for me, the hardest thing to achieve. Once you figure out how to set a synchronous orbit, it is so hard to rendezvous with another object. It takes so much precision to line up perfectly..
A good way to get a fuel efficient path from Kerbin to Mun and vice versa is to get a circular orbit. Once your craft is able to visually see the Mun on the horizon, then you should start the maneuver (same if you see Kerbin from Mun)
A couple things about breaking through Kerbin's atmosphere and getting into orbit.
At around 10k km, begin to turn the rocket east at around 75 degrees, then to 45 degrees at 20k km. It is more efficient to turn early so when you get out of Kerbin's atmosphere, the burn to get an orbit is easier. Also turning east along the equator is the best way to find the most fuel efficient destination to Mun. Fuel efficiency is the key to landing on Mun and getting back to Kerbin.
