B2112's Anime Reviews - Episode 0: Origins

Hey all,

Thanks to a very anime-friendly relationship with my SO, over the past several months I've found myself getting back into anime in a way I hadn't since high school. I've been an anime watcher for probably about ten years now, and would consider myself a fan of the genre. Though I previously had never felt the need to sit down and write about it (apart from lackadaisically maintaining a MyAnimeList page - beware of future score spoilers for future reviews if you end up going there), I figured that it could be fun to jot down some thoughts about some of the anime I have watched to share with my favourite online community. I certainly do not claim to be an expert, but I hope by writing a bunch of detailed thoughts on some shows, other fans will be able to chime in and prompt a discussion - or maybe it could be a place for you to start your own anime-watching journey!

For your reference - with regards to my personal tastes, I tend to gravitate towards a certain style of anime. I don't particularly enjoy shows that are aimed towards children (Pompoko, Hamtaro, etc), nor do I really enjoy shows that are ridiculously fan service-y (High School of the Dead, Free, etc). I prefer shows that are more psychological, dark, or thought provoking with memorable characters, and fascinating storytelling. Without getting into any examples (we'll get there with the reviews), I would say the Western movie equivalents would be films like Se7en, The Game, or Silence of the Lambs. If those tend to be to your taste, then I hope you will find some of the recommendations helpful. Speaking of movies, these reviews won't just be for shows - we will be able to talk about films, too! We also won't be focusing on shows that came out this past year. We will reach back as far as the 80s to talk about influential examples of anime that stand the test of time.

I will also update this post with links to future reviews, so if you happen to show up to the party on Episode 7 and want to see what came before, please feel free to check out the list below!!
