That's when the gaming public spends the most money so it's natural to have a glut of games at that time, while in the summer months people don't really spend lots on games so that's why you usually get a summer drought. It's a bit of a catch-22 really, nobody spends money in the summer because there are really only a few good releases, but if developers spaced out their release window it would be a little less crowded.
Do want -- Personally I think L4D will do just fine, it will probably get buried a little bit for the 360 but on the PC where there is no GoW it will hopefully do great, with lots of people for me to play with... wait that came out wrong!
