Top 10 Games of 2019

Because I skipped last year by mistake to those who still care

List items

  • Not that I hated DmC: Devil May Cry, but I am glad to see old Dante and company back. This game made me like Nero after giving him a distinct look and attitude separate from Dante. V was also interesting to play around with. Even before the special edition this game was excellent.

  • With other souls games players can level up their characters in order to overcome hard challenges. In Sekiro, there is no such thing. Sure players can get new skills, but Sekiro requires pure reflexes and precision. There is a rhythm to its combat, but once you nail it, it's one of the best feelings ever.

  • This is by far the lengthiest Fire Emblem game to date. The fact each individual story path can last upwards to 80 hours each, with one having a divergent path, is astounding. And I didn't even mention the DLC. I do think the game went back on some of the mechanics like ditching the weapon triangle system, but I had a blast throughout.

  • As someone who doesn't like horror games, RE2Make is fantastic. It takes the level design of the original and modernizes its controls and mechanics to make it feel fresh in our day and age. Mr. X's random encounters are a reason enough for it to be this high on the list.

  • As an Obsidian newbie, I am pleasantly surprised how immersed I was in The Outer Worlds. Sure the gunplay and RPG mechanics were sound, but the writing and characters is what truly kept me going. Especially Parvati. Also being able to talk my way out of a fight felt a lot more fulfilling than I thought it would.

  • After the failures of other kickstarter projects like Mighty No 9 and Shenmue 3 I was dreading the one project I invested in to let me down. But it did not. Aside from a couple game breaking glitches, Bloodstained is a phenomenal return to the classic SOTN archetype that popularized Metroidvania all those years. The fact the game is still supported to this day with the rest of the kickstarter promises is a huge plus.

  • Control definitely has some cool tools to abuse, especially with its telekinesis powers. While does have its moments of jank, it does have some noteworthy action. That and the astral maze portion is 10/10 all time material.

  • Borderlands 3 is basically my gaming junk food. It's not exactly good for you, as I'd be the first to admit the writing is a MAJOR decline from the second game. That being said, the shooting loop is still fun, and some important QOL updates like fast travel are very welcome.

  • I might be one of the few people who didn't like the time rift story line since it seemed kind of similar to MK9 a few years back, not to mention a lot of the old cast getting the axe. But solid combat system, amazing visuals, and some neat fan service like Cary Hiryuki Tagawa's Shang Tsung make it all the worthwhile.

  • As much as I enjoyed doing Max Raids, Battling or even the expansion pack's Dynamax Adventure, I can't ignore how the main adventure of Sword and Shield is one of the worst. Plot elements have little to no impact and the characters have very little personality. The wild area is a great idea, and I wish the series allowed full 3D environments in the next generation.
