The Differences Between Jungle Beats

So those of you who keep tabs on my Youtube channel may have noticed I uploaded some video of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat over the weekend - the Gamecube version. It's in my top ten favorite games of all time; the physical sensation of hitting the drums combined with the flow and rhythm of the game - both musically and interactively - really appeals to me in a big way. Whenever I play Jungle Beat, it instantly puts me in to a good mood.

No surprise: When I uploaded my videos, a smattering of other Jungle Beat videos appeared in the Related Videos section, and I got my first taste of the Wii version of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.

What the hell did they do this game? Donkey Kong has lives, now? He has a health meter? Jungle Beat is a high-score-focused game; taking damage in the Gamecube Version would simply subtract from your overall score. Sure, it meant you basically never died, but it was never a game where you needed to worry about dying; it was a game where you were trying to maximize your score and maintain a rhythm.  Enemies were never an obstacle you had to worry about with regards to how much health you had; they served instead as ways to bolster your score if you were doing well enough.

Of course, with the health and 1ups comes a slew of other changes: the levels are almost completely different, with tons of new obstacles and enemies. A considerable amount of the graphics were changed (some to make it look more like Donkey Kong Country). The biggest change of all seems to be the controls. If I'm not mistaken, the bongo-style controls have been removed in favor of something that steers more like a traditional platformer with the occasional bit of Wii Waggle thrown in for specific actions.

It looks like they ruined the Wii version. Apparently, even if you own the DK Bongos, you can't use them on the Wii version. What kind of joke is that? The game was developed for the Bongos, and the Wii has Gamecube Controller ports. "New Play Control" Jungle Beat looks less like a motion-control-enabled port and more like an entirely different game - changed so dramatically that it barely resembles the original version of the game. And I love the original game to death - so obviously, every change they've made for the Wii version does not really make sense, to me. The game didn't need any of this stuff and I'd say it actually detracts from the stuff I enjoy most about Jungle Beat.

Also, while I'm here, I may as well slip in and say that a prototype version of my new website is live, for those of you who care. It is EXTREMELY early, but if you want to keep up with everything I post on the internet, it's a good way to do that. I'll change the URL eventually, but I'll probably make a post here if I do that.

i just played Jungle Beat on my GC like 2 days ago (it still holds up pretty nicely, although i'm still running through that game pretty fast), it's a pretty fun game looking back (at the time i was so-so about it).

The Wii version is indeed rubbish, Nintendo in Kyoto destroyed the awesome game that the great Tokyo team made. (-they made Galaxy also). The GC version we have is by far the better experience with it's tactile Bongo use. The only thing that's good about the Wii version is that it looks slightly better visually at 480p -WS, aside from that it's a BS Wii version.

Most of the other New Play Control games are fine though, Pikmin 1 & 2 are excellent and improve upon the originals. Chibi Robo I think should do so also when that's released.

wow, people played Jungle Beat?
I kid, I kid, I really wanted it myself because of the bongos. I'm sure I could find it now with a bit of searching.

I like the idea of New Play Control, but Jungle Beat, which was about this crazy awesome bongos, completely loses any purpose and you realize that...it probably wasn't a game meant to be played any other way.

I'm sure the changes in the Wii version was to make the game harder. DK now takes three hits, which resets the level you're on if you lose your health. Makes it handy if you want to restart the level if you screwed up a combo. Also, they actually bothered to fit the controls to the Wii controller somewhat. Its much better mapped than the Gamecube controller, by far. My only complaint is that they changed the "Clap" manuver. For one thing, to collect a group of bananas, you hit the jump button in the air. Then you shake the Wii remote (Or nunchuck) to grab everything else in the game. The enemies, activate certain objects, etc. Thats kind of confusing. The other issue I have is that you shake the remote and hold a direction on the control stick to determine where DK will 'Clap Grab.' Its so much shorter and a little tougher to use, because sometimes I found that DK wont always clap in the direction you want him to.

Even playing through the Wii version I dont really care if DK dies. Although sometimes I feel that I'm not really at fault when I die, but hey, the game is pretty forgiving in terms of extra lives, so it doesnt really matter.  Wish they just opted to make a real sequel rather than just a port with one new level. Not to mention the game does lose something without the bongos.

Also, I'll post a Jungle Beat video of my own, fighting the last boss and literally destroying him. (Gamecube version)

I like the idea of your site!

Anyway, I knew New Play Control! changed games, but I didn't know it changed them this much. The Wii version seems to be more Donkey Kong Country-ish from your impressions.

I remember playing the demo with the bongos. You could clap and he would do it in the game! That was great.
