@eloj: I didn't find it too compelling either, and I was a huge King fan already. The pace does pick up in the second book, as he introduces characters with actual personality and inner struggles.
But this series, even though many consider it to be King's great work is quite different than his other books, which I enjoyed a lot more. I always recommend Misery as the first King book, since it's a simple but really captivating story and there's no supernatural element to it.
