Early GOTY 2017 List

I didn't make one of these for last year and it annoys me to not be able to remember what I enjoyed the most from previous years. Most years I don't play 10 games for long enough to consider them my "GOTY," so this is likely to be a top 5.

Honorable mentions:

  • Destiny 2 - The first 50 hours of Destiny 2 were an addictive blur. The last 10 or so were dreadful. I got suckered into thinking there would be more Destiny this time, and while I really enjoyed my two Raid runs, the complete lack of endgame stopped this making my list.

EDIT: 10/01/18: I've moved Persona 5 down to an honorable mention as I didn't get into it over Christmas at all, and I remembered that Shovel Knight: Spectre of Torment was a glaring omission from this list.

  • Persona 5 - I haven't beaten Persona 5. In fact, I've only played about 20 hours. And on top of that, I'm still not sure if I like JRPGs after playing it. But this game has incredible style, and the music is killer. I just don't think I enjoy playing it.

List items

  • Yeah, a Visual Novel is my number 1 this year. With a bullet. Don't ask any questions, just play it.

  • The story in HZD absolutely drew me in, to the point where I was actually going around looking for audio logs (I can't believe it either). This game is gorgeous and possibly my favourite video game story ever. The DLC hasn't grabbed me yet, but I'm at least glad there's more of it.

  • I don't care whether this game comes out in 2017 or not, the 100 hours I've spent with it have been incredible.

  • This could very well be higher up, it is so, so good. But PUBG pipped it purely by how much I've played.

  • After the disappointment of the Plague Knight campaign, Spectre of Torment feels fresh and like a whole new Shovel Knight game. The new movement mechanics were great fun (even if they trivialised the bosses) and the music was a good take on the original OST.
