GOTY 2020

This is my yearly list of my favorite games I played throughout this year. However, this time around, I'm going to break the rules a bit since one of the games on the list I didn't actually finish. I liked the game a lot so I thought I'd include it anyway. It's become a cliche to say this but 2020 was a really rough year and these are the games that made everything a little bit more bearable.

Here are my lists from previous years:

List items

  • Back in April, the pandemic was seriously affecting my daily life and it was very stressful. I don’t know if I want to say that Final Fantasy VII Remake helped me get through that uncertain time but it was definitely a bright spot. It was a big fun blockbuster experience that really brought a smile to my face. While I still don’t know how to feel about the crazy ending, I loved everything else about the game. Even if Part II never comes out, Final Fantasy VII Remake will still be my favorite game I played this year.

  • Playing through 13 Sentinels was an experience. Every time I sat down to play the game, I was greeted with yet another crazy plot twist that would turn the game on its head. Once I figured out the whole mystery, the story was actually fairly simple but the experience of trying to put together the puzzle pieces the game was feeding me was a lot of fun.

  • Helltaker is a very simple little puzzle game that is just bursting at the seams with charm. The game was only an hour or two long but it left such a great impression on me.

  • Mega Man Legends was a real nostalgia trip. I had played the game when I was a kid but never got very far in it. So when I finally completed the game this year it felt like I was finishing something I had started a long time ago. Plus the game is just very cute and fun. Had a good time with this one.

  • I don’t normally play CRPGs and have always been kind of intimated by them. However, after seeing a bunch of news about Buldar’s Gate 3, I decided to check out Larian’s previous game. I was surprised at how approachable it was and how it actually played a lot like a classic point-and-click adventure game but with combat. I greatly enjoyed the 20 hours I spent escaping Fort Joy. In fact the entire Fort Joy section felt like such a complete experience that I put the game down for a while. I will certainly return to Divinity 2 eventually but, even unfinished, it was one of the best games I played this year.
