Sounds like Austin's dark zone experience was way more idealistic than my own.
For me the dark zone was a constant death match, I did not come across a single player that greeted me with anything other than a barrage of bullets. And playing as both a lone player and as part of a small team I could feel nothing but helpless against large parties roaming around together using voice-chat to make sure no lone player moved around un-shot. The bullying stories weren't as similarly horrific as those in Day Z but large groups camping choke points directly next to spawn areas proved frustrating enough for me to give up on the dark zone entirely.
I wasn't too big a fan of Destiny either, so the game probably isn't the fit for me, but when it comes down to it both the game-play and environments within Destiny appear more interesting than The Division- which appears to be a cover-shooter presented in a bland and exhausted environment. (With loot drops of course)
