I have had a few ridiculously named characters, however, I always find them hard to remember. I usually go for names that I like the sound of aesthetically. For example I have often named characters after some of my favorite fantasy game characters: Ostrava of Boletaria (Demon's Souls) and Solaire of Astora (Dark Souls) being the top two. Usually I just use the second part because I like the sound of the regions they originated from. Plus having "of ..." makes them sound kind of noble or important.

Back to the spirit of this thread the last silly name I can remember was naming my Khajit assasin/thief "K'Ching" in Skyrim. I try to stay as lore friendly as possible.

A great read, looking forward to reading more of your work Austin. It's good to have a more analytical perspective around here. The games industry really needs to be having these discussions, they don't happen often enough.

I just love how immersed I can get in a game like that. However, now I can only go back to Skyrim when I have survival and other immersive mods in. I get really into role-playing at that point. One of the reasons I loved New Vegas so much and preferred it to Fallout 3 was that they added the survival or hardcore mode, really helped immerse me.

Hopefully they'll implement something like that at least as an option, however, I don't see it happening on launch. I would also like it if they brought back some of the RPG elements from their previous games. Skyrim was a little too "stream-lined" for me, kind of just made the game feel quite shallow.

I don't mind if they're going for a more action orientated experience even though I prefer the RPG elements. However, I would like them to commit more to one or the other. If they're going to go more action, make the combat system and animations better, if they're going more RPG have some more depth. Or combine them in a more compelling and engaging way.

So I got the game yesterday on PS4 and had a 3 hour session with my housemate after having watched the GB Quick Look.

I'm a huge fan of the first Magicka, completed the campaign and all the DLC many times. I even gave Wizard Wars a shot. Whereas my housemate had never even heard of the games.

Dying in Magicka was common, but man I still have flashbacks from this...

I read a bunch of user reviews before playing, they have been mixed to say the least. Most of the controversy concerns changes in the spellcasting system; this has involved nerfing and some combinations of elements no longer being possible.

Some of these combinations were vital to get high damaging spells in the first Magicka. Although many were ridiculous and killed almost anything instantly, there were enemies who were built to still be challenging, in the DLC, when using spells such as these (e.g.: Cthulhu on the right).

According to what I've read out there, this was to balance the game. Some are comfortable with the changes and others are quite disappointed. It seems that most of the people against these changes were veterans of the game, however, there are plenty of old fans on the other side of the fence.

I for one haven't made my mind up yet, I'm definitely having fun playing it, still one of my favorite co-op experiences out there. Yet on the other hand, I do feel that taking out some of these combinations has made the pool of spells significantly smaller.

I do see the reasoning behind nerfing spells or trying to balance the game, however, taking out spell combinations doesn't come across as the right solution to me. Guess I'll have to wait till I finish it to come to some form of consensus. Still having a great time with it, just don't know if I prefer the first one or not so far.

What about y'all? You enjoying the game? Do you hate the changes? Maybe you are completely indifferent towards the Magicka franchise. Perhaps there are other aspects of the game you would like to discuss, there are still many that have not been addressed.

Please share your thoughts with me.

Keep it real,

Carlos (definitely not a vampire)

About time they offered this, just wish they'd done it a few weeks ago when I needed a refund. Also the 2 hours doesn't sound ideal for shorter games.
