2018 Game of the Year

Hopefully this is just a placeholder that I can add more to later as it is almost 2 am.

List items

  • BOY!

  • Webswinging!

  • Cool Tetris!

  • I. Do. Not. Like. Turn. Based. Strategy.

I love this game. It does so many things that make this genre more approachable and fun for me while not giving up difficulty. Great art, great music, great gameplay. Biggest surprise of the year for me.

  • I wish I had more time to put into this game. I've never been so impressed with a world. I bet if I'd finished it, it would be higher on the list but this is where it ranks now. You can pet your horse.

  • Probably the game I have played the most this year. It's more Horizon, but with some extra goodies in a new map. It can be super relaxing exploring the world or white-knuckle racing online. Makes me want a better video card.

  • They made Monster Hunter approachable. They put it on proper consoles and PC. They supported it with continuing content. Thank you, based Capcom. We are truly blessed.

  • A late addition this year. Gris is short, beautiful, emotive, and breathtaking. The puzzles are clever without being frustrating. I'm excited to see what this studio does next. Hell of a debut.

  • The central gameplay of Smash continues to be super fun, and most of the stuff they added for this version work really well. The unlock grind is not great, though.

  • Lucky's Tale was the game that showed me that seated third-person platformers could work in VR. This iterates on that beautifully and utilizes the medium much better than any game of its kind before. Joyous.
