2020 Game of the Year

List items

  • Looks great, plays great, sounds great. Between the ongoing quest to beat higher heats and constant drip feed of story moments, I got hooked on this game. I got the same feeling from this that Slay the Spire gave me, this desire to keep going that overrode any notion of fatigue.

  • I played both Ori games this year and the jump from one to the next felt so good. This is a clear cut evolution from Ori and the Blind Forest, in terms of mechanics, platforming, and level design. I loved this game and can't wait to see what's next.

  • I enjoyed a lot about this game. It had a good story that really picked up in the last act, paired with a compelling gameplay loop in a gorgeous open world. I'm not a photo mode guy but I took a lot of pictures and video for this one. I have only platinumed a handful of games in my life, but none as long as this one. However, I was still ready for more even after wrapping the trophy up. Excited to see if Sucker Punch does another one of these or jumps into something else from here,

  • Great first PS5 game that cut a lot of the fat from 2018's Spider-Man. I didn't care for a lot of the story, although it really ramped up going into the end as most Marvel/MCU things tend to do. It looks amazing and I really appreciated how much everything has been streamlined, from abilities to open world tasks. Yet another thing where I can't wait to see what's next.

  • The Breath of the Wild knockoff I thought we'd see in spades after the success of that game. It looks great and so far has done a good job of providing a big ol world full of stuff to discover.

  • I spent a good month obsessed with this game during beta. While it didn't last much beyond that, I can't deny how much fun I had in that time. Riot put together a clean package here and while I can't speak to its current state, it had all the makings of a decently balanced TCG with a healthy economy.

  • A welcome update of one of my favorite games of all time. I am not into JRPG's or anime, but I have a soft spot for Persona 5 because of the way it sucked me in. I only played 20 hours of Royal, which mostly covered the same ground as the original Persona 5 with some nice quality of life enhancements. Regardless, that snippet of the game is enough to place on the list.

  • Incredible showcase of the PS5 hardware. Looks, sounds, and plays phenomenally well. I have a feeling it will be higher if I get deeper into it, but as of right now I have only killed a few bosses. Having not gotten very far in the original, it's been refreshing to be truly nervous and cautious in a Souls game again.

  • I am only about five hours in. This game is clearly a technical masterpiece, from the production to the myriad of accessibility settings. I spoiled myself on the broad story strokes before the game even came out, and unfortunately that might be a major reason I haven't put more effort into playing. I like the direction the story went but unfortunately can't comment on the delivery. I might be more drawn to this in a different time, I'm just not in the mood for such dark material and specifically gruesome violence.
