Best of 2009

Concise: Best of 2009

List items

  • Untouchable, as far as I'm considered. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is among the best games of the decade.

  • Despite awkward controls on the consoles and a variety of graphical issues, Dragon Age: Origins is a refreshing return to the style of RPG that made Bioware famous. There should be more RPGs on this list, but it's rare that one of this caliber is released.

  • An improvement in almost every way over Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare 2 is on this list primarily because of its multiplayer, which is so rich that the game's bombastic yet forgettable single player campaign hardly matters.

  • Probably the biggest (and most pleasant) surprise of the year, Akham Asylum is the kind of game Batman deserves--now if only somebody could do this for DC's other leading comic book hero.

  • The first of three sandbox games on this list. Despite the silly name, inFAMOUS is terrifically fun.

  • Derivative of Super Metroid? Sure. Amazing game? You betcha'. This XBox Live game was far better than many games released at retail this year. With the exception of Uncharted 2, it is also the single player game through which I worked my way through the most.

  • I liked the original Assassin's Creed, but the sequel improved upon it in almost every way. Probably one of the more compelling stories in video games this year.

  • Another super fun game that doesn't take itself too seriously, the destructibility of terrain, fun weapons, and unique setting make Mars an engaging place to explore.

  • Though I'd have preferred a Mario Galaxy sequel this year, a return to old school Mario is always welcome. The kinetic and chaotic 4 player co-op makes it a fun game to bring to a party, provided your friends aren't a bunch of jerks.

  • Though my copy has been shelved for months, Killzone 2 is the *other* strong FPS available on the PS3 this year. Not exactly a Halo killer, I did prefer it to ODST.
