Giving this blogging thing a second chance

Hello!

Two years since the last post, but I'm back. I have still been playing actively and thought I should try this again. Writing about my impressions of games and hardware I come across. When I tried this the last time, I found that I fell off many games, resulting in little output. To avoid this, I might do some kind of weekly posts, to give updates about my progress. Plus I'll definitely return to my hit blog segment: Glitchy Picture. :D

Also a thing I would like to write more about is my personal experiences and issues with certain games or game mechanics. I have a seeing disability, meaning that I experience games differently than the majority. So this is something tha i will be looking in the future. Sadly just as with any sort of writing I often struggle to come up with topics.

Glitchy picture part 6: The Amazing Spider-Man

This apparently being my first post this year, HAPPY NEAR 2016! ^^ My thesis etc. have kept me really busy, but I've still been playing things as much as I can.

Bought this game today. There is actually quite a lot to like here but as one Steam reviewer put it: "the optimization is almost worse than in Arkham Knight." But once I got the game running properly, it has been quite fun. I went to do one of the photography side activities and then this happened.

-I hardly ever pay full price for a game on Steam. This might have actually been the third after Bioshock Infinite and Cities: Skylines. And no regrets, I have constantly come back to this game over and over again. I’ve played this even more than Splatoon. I guess it’s just because over time as I have taken breaks from playing it’s much easier to come back to because I understand the rules of football but Splatoon has changes so much in a short time.

-Many describe this game as just car soccer but it adds the physical element and walls of ice hockey.

-Super fun online, although when playing ranked matches it’s thrustrating when players forfeit a game with just a minute or so to go. I think that players leaving matches deserve a harder punishment. I’m also quite annoyed that before season 1 started my 2vs2 rating was over 500 but now I’m stuck at just above 200.

-It’s just as fun against bots. Pro tip though you can score against easy bots from the kick off and it works every time. Medium bots are a good challenge.

-Practice and Season modes are perfect for honing your skills for online games. It’s just that Season mode doesn’t unlock anything special itself so if you beat it once there isn’t any reason to go back. It’s good at least that you get the same amount of XP in online and offline games.

-Overall the game looks gorgeous, the grass looks really good.

-All cars have tons of paint jobs, rims, hats and flags.

-I actually have a great story that I went to ask on the steam forums whether the devs will add more flags. I was instructed to go to the devs own forums and wrote on a thread and so I got the Estonian flag added to the game. Once it was added I haven’t changed flags since.

But this is certainly a game that will rank highly on my GOTY list.

Glitchy picture Part 4: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Haven't really been updating this blog because schoolwork has kept me busy, but this will certainly change in the summer. I ended up playing Amalur because I first tried the Witcher 2 but after trying a certain battle for an hour I was at a point where I just ragequit and installed Kingdoms of Amalur.

Right now I'm around level 10. This was certainly not the first thing of this type to happen in the game and obviously such things are bound to happen in such a big game. So I had this big attack chain going and the hit that killed the bandit was a juggle attack so I guess it got caught because guys were not supposed to get that high:

Platforminers

So this might not be that popular of a game but I saw this come out sometime in the fall and I finally bought this during the christmass sale. A weird game since there isn't a lot there but I got weirdly addicted to this.

-So as is evident from the name that this game combines platforming and not mining. well i guess if you count walking over a mineral and then stuff just pops out and then you pick it up. The game is more about platrofming and shooting, but I guess Platforminers is a better name that "Platforkillaz" or "Platformshooter". The game does not even have a pickaxe!

-The steam page says that this has gun loot like Borderlands, but the guns in this game just don't have any personality, which is a big shame. Well first of all there is only four classes of weapons: pistol, SMG, shotgun and rocket launcher. But still in this the only difference of two SMG's is just that they are different color, even the names are really bland. just like "bazooka 61 CO-IR AME" which is just so lame.

-A big plus is the character creator which has a lot of options. The best part is that by changing stuff you chance the name of your character. for example: Jim Punchbite and Julia Skybreath. And according to the game the characters appearance changes the world you will get. The only thing you can change about your character later on is the hair, which some enemies will drop. I don't know is this actually the first name that gives different stats to hair. I usually went for hair with "one extra jump" bonus.

-So the game is mostly about killing enemies gathering guns and minerals and then selling them. The bigger plot beihnd the game is that you are trapped in this mine and the only way to get out is to find these magical colored guns around the world so you can build this giant robot drill in order to escape. And in order to make exploration easier you can jump five times in a row.

Glitchy picture Part 3: Just Cause 2

One of my favorite game worlds to just spend time in. I'm quite excited about the recently announced sequel. This happened recently to me when I was just having some fun, liberating villages. And when the heat showed up, I started seing these strange red rays coming from the sky. Usually they only have simple laser sights...

One fact about this game that if I had played this game through before I had made my game of the year list I would have put it a couple of positions lower because that joke of a boss fight. But I feel I am done with this game, but i'll probably go back once I get the Season pass.

-As I mentioned in my Game of the year list, I am a huge fan of Lord of the Rings, watched the trilogy in theater as a kid and recently finished watching the Hobbit trilogy, which was a huge waste of time...

-Oh man the beginning, so tragic Glimpses of his family. They seemed so happy.

-Feeling right at home with the combat, oh how have I missed them Arkham games.

-Those damn captains are everywhere. Right off from the beginnning I saw two captains in the first mission.

-Rat Bag the Orc seems funny, it's just a damn shame that he is in so few missions. In the end it just seems so sad after a certain point they don't even mention him any more. I'm not sure, did he in fact die in that cut scene with that knight of sauron.

-My first captain kill just felt like something else. He killed me when we first encountered but I got him the second time around.

-Looking back at the fact that the captains can show up any time during any mission is a great challenge, but at the time it really annoyed me that during one bow side mission I died like 3-4 times in a row.

-I also didn't like how the missions are structured because it seems like at all times there are two slightly different stories going on.

-The collectibles are very well done. I collected all of the items and those things that form that elven painting. Although they are immediately visible on the map, a couple of them were very well hidden and I really had to look for them. But I didn't complete those hunting or flower gathering challenges.

-When you kill Orc captains you get a random rune for your weapons. But this just felt unnecessary. I don't know why, I guess perhaps I would have liked them more if the effects had been crazier.

-The talents you learn along the way are quite interesting. However close to the end it gets way too overpowered. Examples of the later talents:

  1. The first hit you take does not break your combo.
  2. A perfectly timed combo gives you x3 towards your combo count.

-Back to the story: It just felt wrong to me to have Smigl in this game. On the other hand I was really impressed how "good" he looked.

-The second map is so much better. It's quite a bit more colorful. And yeah right at the point when it opens up I started to have thoughts that "there has to be more". It felt really similar to Far Cry 3, because I really liked the secod map much in that game too.

-As soon as I heard that there is a way to manipulate the orcs to switch over to your side. It really changes combat and makes it so that you can really change the flow.

-And on that note: the way that I hated the orcs that killed me and thus got promotions, I kind of felt bad when an orc captain which was under my spell died in a fight.

-Ok the final boss fight: Fuck that... seriously. At that point I had played the game for about 20 hours. And that final boss fight lasted like 30 seconds and it's a fucking QTE. I even had thoughts like, fuck was this all a waste of time.

I was watching random old Quick Looks, watched a quick look of that VVVVVVVVVV-game and realised I had forgottten how cool that game is. So then I went to the steam page to check the price ant the features and saw this. I' m just wondering who did this: is this Steams fault or is it the devs. Just thought this is kinda funny so here you go.

Some personal gaming news :D

1. Premium membership

I saw the ad for discounted premium membership and decided now's the time. Bought it mostly for the F1 podcast and those awesome Mario party videos.

speaking of mario....

2. BOUGHT A WII U

I haven't owned a console for two years after my xbox 360. But I already have a pretty powerful computer so i saw no need for those more powerful consoles. I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the NES so I am excited to being part of the gang again. For a while I even considered the 2DS but I'd much rather play on a TVII. (old one, i know)

This years E3 really sold me on the Wii U with a lot of great games coming up. I will probably pre-order that Captain Toad game. (Dec 9th will be a glorious game) If someone's thinking that: "hey the Wii U doesn't have a lot of games." But I didn't own the first Wii and i found out that the games are just backwards compatible. So all those glorious Wii games. The only setback is that I didn't realize that so many games require that Nunchuck thing. So I have to get that.

I got my Wii motion plus controller today and I decided that now that I'm an owner of a Nintendo console I should go all the way and I got the special Luigi version.

And the other thing bothering me is that I previously thought that you are able to take screenshots by pressing some button. However this is not the case. You are able to take only one screenshot at a time. And the only way to use that picture is to insert it to your Miiverse post. This only bothers me because if I would have wanted to write something to this blog and it would have been nice to add some personal pictures, but sadly that won't happen unless they change that.

So yeah I am currently playing New Super Mario Bros. U. I'm in that Soda Jungle world or something like that. :D As I mentioned I want to buy Captain Toad and Mario Kart 8 and I saw Pikmin 3 cheap at a local store so that could also be interesting. Oh and I got Mad World with my Wii mote. I might update later on which games i'll get.

Although I like owning the Wii U I still don't want to blow all my money on that because the eventual Steam Christmas sale is coming up.

But that's all for now ^^
