My Favorite Albums of 2011 as of 8/20/11

What a stressful year it’s been for me. Between school, love and loss, and serious contemplations on where I intend to take myself after I graduate at the end of this year, I’ve had a lot to think about. Thankfully there has been a few stand out albums this year to tend and mend my sanity. In concurrence with last year’s list, I will make my selections as personal as possible and less in line with the standard critically acclaimed album lists.

(In ABC Order)

Balance and ComposureSeparation
– Somewhere between post-hardcore and punk, this is the hardest album on my list. I’m not normally into this sort of stuff but this album surprised me. It features progressive elements akin to Brand New’s Daisy. This album doesn’t have any filler either at 12 tracks/48 minutes. For the niche it fits into, it does it remarkably well. Even if you don’t normally seek this stuff out, give it a chance.

Bayside - Killing Time
– This came out back in February and quite frankly, it’s STILL my AOTY. It has a perfect amount of Bayside style with a perfect amount of production treatment. Furthermore, it has some of the most catchy and aggressive songs to bolster up the people put down by bad relationships. If you’re not there, take yourself back to that state of mind and enjoy this record for posterity.

The Dangerous Summer
War Paint
– Their debut LP was amazing. This is nothing short of their debut and it takes it a bit more progressively.

Incubus - If Not Now, When?
– This is the year of bands returning to form as you’ll see in this list and later in the year(hello Blink 182). Incubus released their last album Light Grenades back when I was a first semester freshmen in college. I am now a last semester grad student and after their 5 year hiatus, they have dropped this album. Sometimes you forget the magic some bands have that is never replicated successfully by other bands. This album takes a more downbeat approach compared to past albums but conjures up a very large sound that is pulled upwards by Boyd’s amazing vocals.

The Joy FormidableThe Big Roar
– They’re like Metric, the album is solid, I don’t think I need to say more.

The MakeThe Box
– They are former members of Number One Gun and it shows. I love the catchiness of the melodies and the NOG style production makes this an instant favorite for me. If you like pop-rock, try this.

Manchester Orchestra
Simple Math
– It’s not what I expected honestly. It’s not as approachable as their last record but it did grow on me eventually. They also have one of the best music videos I’ve seen this year.

Scattered TreesSympathy
– Of all the moody folk records I’ve listened to so far this year, this is the one I come back to. Unlike some of the other folk records, it balances itself on every front. Not too heavy, not too light, not too sparse, not too overproduced, and so on. This is the album you can relax to and set your mind into a contemplative state. I know I’ve need it more than a few times so far. Oh and if I may trick you with Star Wars, watch the video.

The Story So FarUnder Soil & Dirt
– I listened to more pop punk albums this year than any other. Rather than tack on 4-5 more pop punk albums to this list, I included my current favorite. Enjoy.

Sum 41Screaming Bloody Murder
– Burned by his former wife Avril Lavigne, frontman Deryck Whibley brings the band back to their darker form seen in their paramount album Chuck. This is the first album I’ve ever had to remove tracks to improve the tonal flow. I removed 3 tracks that were a bit too upbeat and out of place sounding on the record. They’re not bad tracks but they have no place on a record titled Screaming Bloody Murder. That said, glad to see the band is still going strong and this record is solid.

Taking Back SundayTaking Back Sunday
– For me, this is the most anticipated reunion in the rock scene this year(though I do anticipate Blink’s new album). This album is far from perfect. Some tracks are most definitely weaker than others. What it does do is recapture the spark the band had in their debut album. This is not Tell All Your Friends part 2 but rather a natural follow up. There’s something between these band members that gives their sound a more heartfelt feeling. I’ve listened to quite a few albums this year with dual vocals and intense instrumentals and none of them can quite match the sincerity and candor of TBS. So imperfect album or not, this album is worth every second I give to it.

TyphoonA New Kind of House
– The biggest band on this list, literally. This 15 member indie band originates from Portland and features strings and horns in addition to the standard folk rock instruments. Even better, they’re progressive and not so folky. It’s hard to describe their spirit so watch the video.

Yellowcard
When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes
– This is in my opinion, their best and most refined album. Cheers to band reunions

This is the third year I’ve been doing these lists, hopefully someone got something out of them

Top 10 songs + albums of 2010

Hi there, I bring you my lists again this year. As always, you will most certainly not agree with my lists, so don’t even try. Take it for what it is, enjoy.

My top 10 favorite songs of 2010:Honorable Mentions:Conspiracy - Terrible Things
The ConsequenceYou Me At Six
Tell ‘EmSleigh Bells
Good Graces, Bad InfluenceThe Spill Canvas
Her Words Destroyed My PlanetMotion City Soundtrack
I Felt FreeCirca Survive

10. Unspoken- Weezer

8. Ms. CrumbyThe Audition
7. We Don’t Want Your BodyStars
6. 1000 Years - Portugal. The Man
5. Suddenly - BT
4. We Were Thinking of Evolving(Wake Up)K Sera
3. アルクアラウンド – サカナクション2. Get OutCirca Survive
1. Forest - Number One Gun

My top 10 favorite albums of 2010:

Honorable mentions:Hurley by Weezer
The Game of Monogamy by Tim Kasher
American Ghetto by Portugal. The Man
Light Chasers by Cloud Cult

10. Dancing with a Ghost by Valencia – Huge improvement over their already good debut album. Solid from start to finish.

9. Some Things Don’t Wash Out by You, Me, and Everyone We Know – Catchy and over the top, overly honest and toppling over horn instrumentals. It’s sincere and too much and that’s why we should like it.

8. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West – You see this on just about every list. It appeals to even people like myself who aren’t into this genre. It’s not perfect but it’s damn good.

7. Of The Blue Colour of The Sky by OK Go – I feel this album is overlooked. Maybe it’s not as fast paced as some of the other albums but this is a finely crafted album that never drags but burns slowly while maintaining the OK Go appeal. Some absurdly awesome videos have come out for this album as well, go youtube them now!

6. The Narrative by The Narrative - It’s the sort of album that you take for granted. It’s light pop rock with male/female vocals and superb song writing. Next to my #1, this is a true indie gem.

5. The Five Ghosts by Stars – This band is and always was amazing. Male/female vocals as usual though the songs are shorter and the album is paced accordingly.

4. Illuminaudio by Chiodos – Former lead vocalist Craig Owens may have left but they replaced him with someone with balls and then proceeded to create their best album to date. Goodluck with D.R.U.G.S. Craig.

3. Savages by The Gay Blades – The Gay Blades first album Ghosts was great and I expected this to be similarly great. However, they didn’t just make another great album but they exponentially stepped their game up. They’re no longer just catchy indie rockers, they’ve crossed into progressive ass kickery with a good amount of sincerity.

2. Blue Sky Noise + Appendages EP by Circa SurviveI listed both the album and the recently released EP since they are both great. Appendages is b-sides from BSN but happens to serve as the perfect companion piece bringing your down from the intensity of BSN while also coming out during the appropriate wintery time of the year. BSN is intense yet more structured and accessible than any of their previous work. Get Out is the most kick ass song I’ve heard all year(next to Sleigh Bells’ Tell ‘Em).

1. Sever Your Roots by The Felix Culpa – This is the most cohesive, intense, and well crafted album release I’ve heard this year. Reminiscent of MUTEMATH’s Armistice(my 2009 #1 album) if only for having such a solid intense experience from beginning to end. Nothing is extraneous and the motifs are there. The musicianship is top notch. Listen to this album in one sitting.

Closing thoughts:
I am more self-aware of the flaws in my list this year,. There are albums I feel I should be placing on it(e.g., Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs and Gaslight Anthem’s American Slang) but some part of me is resisting it. If I’ve improved on anything this year, it’s making it more personal albeit less comprehensive. Even still, I’m happy(with it) and let that improvement be a metaphor to carry me into 2011.

Music you should be listening to - 2010 Edition

Blue Sky Noise

This will be informal, less detailed, and less structured than my previous entries. I did not get to listen to as much music as I did last year for various reasons. Cutting to the chase, in no particular order is music I enjoyed this year*:

*this is based on albums, not individual songs

サカナクション(sakanaction) - kikUUiki
Genres: Alternative rock, Electronica, Pop, New Wave, Dance, Rock

For having the single that got stuck in my head for the longest this year. This album has some great catchy songs splicing together some funky electronica effects with rock.

Sample:
アルクアラウンド (Walking around) -

Valencia - Dancing With A Ghost
Genres: Alternative rock, punk

A more refined effort from the band compared to their still great debut a few years ago. This album won me over on the first listen. There are no duds, every track is just great.

Sample:
Dancing With A Ghost - (featuring Patrick Swayze)

The Felix Culpa - Sever Your Roots
Genres: Progressive indie, post-hardcore

This band self-released their new album at thefelixculpa.bigcartel.com It is probably the most ambitious album I've heard so far this year. It's hard to sample a single song from the album because it's really one of those ones where you need to listen to the whole thing all the way through. It's complex yet accessible and if you are into music with depth, I can't recommend this enough.

Sample:
Our Holy Ghosts -

_____________________________________________
The Narrative - The Narrative
Genres: Indie Pop/Rock

Another self-released album, this album washes over you in soft male/female vocals. It's light, it's rock, and it's just catchy enough to make it listenable any time of the year.

Sample:
Fade -

_____________________________________________
OK Go - Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky
Genres: Electronic funk, Alternative rock, power pop

This band produces the MOST entertaining music videos every damn time they release a song. I highly recommend you watch the sample for this one. This album takes the band much deeper down the rabbit hole in terms of rock electro hyrbid jams. This album flows great as a whole and some great funk electro moments in some of the songs. I love this band and album, let it win you over.

Sample:
White Knuckles - (if you like dogs, it's a must watch)

_____________________________________________
Portugal. The Man - American Ghetto
Genres: Experimental rock, Psychedelic pop, Progressive rock

They release a phenomenal record every year. Check my previous entries to see more of my praise for this band, they're just plain awesome in everything they do.

Sample:
1000 Years -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd24ACL62HQ

_____________________________________________
Circa Survive - Blue Sky Noise
Genres: Progressive rock, experimental rock

Their second album never grabbed but this one sure did. Featuring the most bad ass song("Get Out") I've heard this year as their first single and also having one of my favorite softer songs of the year("I Felt Free"). This record is solid.

Sample:
Get Out -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvAQEx_Itfw&ob=av2n

_____________________________________________
Stars - The Five Ghosts
Genres: Indie pop, Indie rock

Another album with soft voices that can just wash over you. I want this band to play at my fake wedding. This band has been around however and they continually have great moments varying from dance beat hymns to piano centered call to arms.

Sample:
We Don't Want Your Body -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgocyn8Jw-E

_____________________________________________
Tim Kasher - The Game of Monogamy
Genres: Indie rock, Indie folk

Away from the shenanigans of his main band Cursive, Tim has gone straight to the gold. Heartbreak and other shitty parts of life are dressed up in the progressive woe and majesty of orchestral arrangements and Tim Kasher's rock.

Sample:
Cold Love -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=143i6AvVQ6s

_____________________________________________

In the interest of time, the rest of the albums that stick out in my mind are the following:
The Audition - Great Danger, You Me at Six - Hold Me Down, Chiodos - Illuminaudio, Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns, Ludo - Prepare the Preparations, Motion City Soundtrack - My Dinosaur Life, The Spill Canvas - Formalities, Spoon - Transference

Thanks if you actually read this.
