So here's my problem with this article: it assumes that someone playing a game against a more skilled opponent won't enjoy themselves, and that someone playing a game against a less skilled opponent will enjoy themselves. That is the only way that matchmaking becomes a zero sum game: if you assume that someone who wins must be having fun and someone who loses must not be having fun.
Not everyone goes into a game wanting an easy win, and not everyone is upset when they lose. Really, if you only have fun when you win easily, I would say there's not much point in playing a multiplayer game. Play singleplayer, set it to easy, and win every time.
I don't find games fun when there's no danger of losing. Stomping some poor bastard isn't fun. Also, playing with people who are better than you is the best way to become better yourself.
