actual impressions blog of the lawbreakers closed beta

So i'm going to try and write a few short thoughts on lawbreakers

i'm really loving the game so far

Law breakers obviously is a team based shooter from boss key productions, helmed by cliffy b

as a big fan of cliff i've been massively exited for this game for a while

And it's going quite nicely i think, with some gripes obvouisly

the game is really a combination of hero shooter concepts with more death match arena shooter one's, you play one of 7 classes at the moment, and fight in one of two game modes. The game takes use of a lot of crazy vertical, and fast paced movement via different unique ways of moving for each class, and low gravity zones (one of the name sakes of the game (breaking the laws of gravity physics))

firstly the enforceres my personal favorite class out of the beta, as well as the most rounded and complete feeling character in the game right now, he's a guy with an assault rifle, a speed buff that makes him move and shoot faster, a tazer/shot gun thing, a rocket pack on his shoulder, an emp grenade, and like all characters a melee kick attack. What makes this guy so good in my opinion is that the game uses this concept, were it takes the kind of attacks you see in overwatch, looks at them through a fighting game lens, then throws them in an arena shooter. So basically you're using moba attacks, like fighting game combos, in an arena shooter. The enforcer does this far better than any one at the moment. Weather your kicking a cheeky blade wielding assassin into a wall, then speed buffing them to oblivion with your assault rifle, or lighting someone up a with the AR just to have him round a corner, then hunting him down super quick and running up on him with a crazy shotgun chain, or emping the entire enemy team, locking them out of using there powers, then comboing your speed buffed AR with your 4 missile volley ultimate to rain down absolute hell, this guy just feels super satisfying all around, and he really demonstrates a really appealing aspect of the game to me.

There's two main kinds of combat that really stick out to me in lawbreakers at the moment, firstly it's these really intense 1v1 arena duels you get in, were you're trying to out doge, out aim, and out combo your opponent all at the same time and it works supper well a lot of the time, it's just really fucking cool. Another aspect to it is the areil combat, some say it feels sluggish as hell, but i disagree, i feel like the "know how" as to how move around these area's quicker is there, the game just expects you to learn how to do it. The amount of times i've read, people just be like, uhh blind fire is useless really just shows how little they messed around with it, other wise they'd know how invaluable it is for getting around zero g (blind fire by the way is a mechanic in the game that lest you shoot 180 behind you without looking) tough i'll admit it could be a bit less vexing, a bit quicker, it really just urks me to see people not get what the game's trying to do and just write the whole thing off. Any way i feel like the ariel aspect these 1v1 duels take is really satisfying at times and just adds a whole knew element, especially on this one map with these little gravity, sphere things that fling you around and give you momentum, it's really neat. Just chaining all these skills into one, how to move around zero g better, how to combo, how to doge, how to aim, how to kick, how to just move in general, it's super engaging with the right two classes.

The other really great aspect to the combat is these ridiculously fast paced offensive team plays, that feel like participating in a legit blitz krieg when you pull them off, just imagine the kind of offensive plays that make for a great over-watch match, but with the speed turned to 40. it's also very fun.

Anyway this leads me to my first problem with the game right now, when your not doing one of these two things, the game feels kind of stale, your just sort of lonesomely standing on points the enemy is ignoring because it's in your base and you spawned right by it, or you're just kind meandering around killing dudes while you wait for the battery to charge. It'd really be cool if there was a game mode were you really had to be constantly moving around the map, and taking full advantage of the crazy movement and speed of the game, all the time. Like to compare it to ut 2004 which did this much better with modes like onslaught that had you constantly locked out of and pushing through/flanking different areas of the map, or double domination, that was also just great with how quick it was (also i think some of the maps for that had alternating base spawns but i might be wrong), this just feels really lame atm for a cliff bleszinski arena shooter. My idea would be a mode that has five capture points, and 2 of them unlock at random, till one team wins right? it'd be fun. Also i'd really like an elimination mode, like some good ass "Gridlock" quality elimination maps would do this game serious justice, get on it Cliff.

Which takes me to my next my next point the maps in this, they're all the fucking SAME, and they're really lame and simple too, you go left and you go to the bouncey castle, go right and you go to the tubes, that's it, like maybe this formula would be a bit more excusable it if was just cap the battery that used it, but the fact that it seems like these maps are universal is just lame, and pluss you can do so much with ctf, ESPECIALLY one flag ctf.. like a U shaped map, easy peasy dude, there you go, great idea, take it, or maybe a 4 shaped map, another good one.

Anyway i'm running out of steam, so i'll just wrap it up

a big gripe for me was the vanguard and juggernaut, the vanguard's easy, make her gun more beefy, half a clip before it does shit, yuck, secondly the juggernaut just feels like an odd class to me like i get that he's supposed to suck in low g, but is that really a good idea, zero g is the game's name sake after all, i mean just give him some range, i keep mentioning this lunging melee attack every where i go, but just give him something please, make his shot gun have more kick forward when you blind fire it or something. Like maybe he'd feel more at home once there's more specialized classes that suck at one thing everyone else can do in the game, but i don't even like the game going in that direction, fix him please, i actually played him a ton but fix him still,. also medics grenades are too spamy, make his reload slower, and give the titans arc gun less range. and make getting chopped by assassin less god damn confusing, add more classes please, i spent the first half of the day to day thinking up 6 really cool dudes

that about raps it up for now, i'm tired peace, i'll probably add more later.
