Fudging the Numbers 0

The story of Mighty No. 9’s Kickstarter campaign has been recounted about as many times as the game’s chief inspiration, Capcom’s Mega Man franchise, has had sequels and spinoffs. Overseen by a number of key producers and programmers of the classic (i.e. “numbered”) Mega Man games, Mighty No. 9 tries its best to pay homage to its roots while offering its own changes to spice up the tried-and-true formula, but the finished product doesn’t feel much like an evol...

Very challenging, but also very satisfying 0

"Simple, yet effective" is probably the best way to describe the independently-developed puzzle platformer VVVVVV. It looks and sounds like an old Commodore 64 game and doesn't have a lot of the amenities that many other platform games have (no jumping, enemies, power-ups, locked doors, etc.), but it uses what it has in good fashion. The key to the game is to find your missing comrades, who were separated from you after a trip through a parallel dimension. After completing the tutorial le...

The only solution is to evolve 0

If you own an iPhone or an iPod Touch, you probably already know of Space Invaders: Infinity Gene, the latest in a long line of shoot-em-ups by the series that helped kick off the genre more than 30 years ago. The game has recently shown up on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade…but just how well does the game hold up against faster-paced contemporaries like DoDonPachi Resurrection and ESPGaluda II? In a few words: pretty good, actually. The main gimmick of...

Bullets from Heaven 0

Sin and Punishment, a fast-paced rail shooter, never got much of a chance to succeed outside Japan. Though it had English voice acting and required little localization (the subtitles were in Japanese), it was released close to the end of the Nintendo 64′s life cycle, but became a popular pick when it was released on the Wii’s Virtual Console service. A sequel was almost guaranteed, and Sin and Punishment: Star Successor made its way across shores, to the delight of many of its fans. You have a ch...

Chewing bubblegum 2

Age of Zombies is a PSP minis shoot-em-up where you play as Barry Steakfries, a wise-cracking, time-traveling action hero who is out to rid the world of the undead. You guide him through five different eras (prehistoric times, the 1930′s, Ancient Egypt, feudal Japan, and the future) as you try to shoot down as many zombies as you can before they can maul you to death. There are fifteen levels in all, with every three levels punctuated with a boss battle against a large zombified opponent...

Izuna and Shino should really find a new agent 0

Izuna, the bouncy, barely-dressed and perpetual job-hunting ninja is on the prowl once again. After diving through randomized dungeons and staring down angry gods in her own game series, and moonlighting as a ninja-for-hire in Rondo of Swords, she’s found herself (and her partner Shino) among the dramatis personae of a fighting game called Windy X Windam. The game is set in a faraway land where characters imbued with magical power-ampli...

I kinda like being a turtle 0

Say what you will about Ubisoft’s handling of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles licensed games since they took over for Konami around 2007, but you have to admit that the green guys are still marketable after years of comics, films, animated series, action figures, and even video games. The time around, Ubi and Game Arts have brought PlayStation 2 and Wii owners a new kind of beat-em-up in the vein of the Super Smash Bros. series (which Game Arts assisted in development), which seems to t...

Time well spent 0

What if you were only given thirty seconds to save the world? That’s the premise behind XSEED Games and Marvelous Entertainment’s latest PSP role-playing game, Half-Minute Hero, a fast-paced RPG which sports a look that harkens back to the days of the 8-bit Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior games on the NES. In actuality, Half-Minute Hero is four games on one disc (or download; it’s also available on the PlayStation Network for the benefit of PSPgo users). The first is “Hero 30″ mode, a role-playing...

Pretender to the throne 0

Since 1994, the King of Fighters series has been SNK’s marquee franchise – a massive crossover fighting game using characters from many of its older series such as Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Ikari Warriors, and even Psycho Soldier (where Athena and Kensou made their debuts). 15 years later, the series introduces itself to the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 generation with The King of Fighters XII, which sets out to redefine the franchise to appeal both to newcomers and long-time fans. Does it succeed...
