@wolfgame: I'm sorry, but people lose that claim to be judge souly by their own actions as soon as they join a movement. The purpose of a movement or a hash tag is to speak in one voice so your voice can be heard. If that movement has negative connotations then you're voluntarily associating yourself withe those negative connotations. You can't have your cake and eat it too. You can't use a movement to be heard and also claim to share no responsibility for the actions of that movement.

@heyguys: I'd start up a consumer watchdog group with leadership and members. With its own forum and everything. Stated goals and also a policy as far as member's actions allowing for dismissal from the group.

@wolfgame: OK, are you actually going to ignore that GamerGate is a movement, not just a hash tag?

I mean, is gamergate responsible for getting Intel to pull ads from gamasutra or not?

@wolfgame: excuse me for expecting people to take responsibility for what they support.

You can have a voice without joining a movement.

@kingroyce: that's not all it is. It's a letter writing campaign, its organized in a decentralized way on several place,, including git repositories, 8chan, and the eacapists forums.

While it may be just a twitter hash tag to some, it's in all actuality much more than that.

@kingroyce: there are plenty of ways to control who is and isn't part of a movement. By actually organizing. By not being anonymous. By having agreed upon goals. By having members instead of encouraging drive by membership.

@wolfgame: Again, the only people to blame are the people willing to support a movement who refuses to remove anonimity or have leaders or any of the other necessities to root out bad actors.

If those people don't want to associate with something toxic that's an easy thing to do, stop supporting GG.

@kingroyce: That's not how movements work. If you join together to make your voices louder without putting in place mechanisms for accountability then the entire movement is only as good as its bad actors.

@kingroyce: What's the name I'm associating myself with?

None.

That's my point. I'm not part of a movement, I'm responsible for my actions alone.

By joining a movement you associate yourself with that movement and all actors involved in that movement. It doesn't matter if the movement is poorly organized and has no mechanisms for removing bad actors or any form of accountability. That's the fault of a poorly thought out irresponsible movement.

By being opposed to a movement I've done nothing besides state I don't support that movement. It doesn't associate me with everyone else.
