I can remember being 11 and this being the thing that finally made the N64 purchase make sense in our household since we had all played through the DKC games. I was in denial the whole time about it, but the real meat of this game is absolutely miserable item collection. It didn't occur to me as a kid, but I felt real dread upon encountering of the collectible-gated objectives in this game. Despite some pretty conceptually cool boss battles and obviously high production value, it's still just a slog. It's the 3d platformer equivilent of a 100 hour JRPG, and it's just not worth the time it takes to complete.
