Scariest Games
Not the best horror games, but the scariest.
Not the best horror games, but the scariest.
This game was 13 years old when I played it, but it still completely held up. Masterful use of sound, fixed camera angles, and disturbing imagery makes Silent Hill 2 an exquisitely dreadful game.
P.T. earns its scares through pacing, starting off with the most mundane location I've ever seen in a videogame, and slowly becoming a blood red nightmare filled with disturbing images.
Bringing the thrills of a fast-paced game without sacrificing the atmosphere of slower burn scares, and using jump scares but never as a crutch, Outlast is the most exhilarating game I've ever played.
I found myself getting used to it in the last hours of the game, but for most of the journey, Amnesia: The Dark Descent has a deeply oppressive atmosphere, making the simple activity of walking down a corridor feel like a hardship.
While it can be more frustrating than frightening, Alien: Isolation uses its budget to create some truly memorable set pieces, and always remains true to its legendary source material.
The game takes a turn for the action heavy towards the end, but the first three quarters of RE7 balance fun mechanics with suspense very well, offering a variety of flavours of horror across its small estate.
