I'm usually not the "commentey" kind of person, I like listening more than speaking but I really want to comment on two things on @mikew1980uk's comment.

@mikew1980uk said:

Personally, I think this is the worst time for video games. Whenever I see things posted by people on whatever gaming site or Youtube comments section, it's almost 100% negative.

The problem here is that youtube gaming is full of negativity and drama in general. If you ignore places that are huge and where drama is usually the #1 thing that people read you'll find that most communities are actually really nice to each other. Theres a ton of well modded places over the internet.

Because I do not know what kind of negativity you mean, when you wrote "100% negative" I think of the worst stuff so I go with that. Gaming related Drama is also usually the #1 reason of Negativity on the video game parts of Youtube so I elaborate on that. You may think of something else, but from what I thought when I read your comment.

The thing is that Youtube is one big place where no channel exists in a bubble. So if some huge Youtuber gets angry about person X and that same person gets featured on some other channel in a positive light, natually the people shout and get angry over it. And because Subscribers, who may also be content creators cater to their audiences expectations, so all drama has to be personal also. This is of course a oversimplification of most drama that happen on the internet, expecially on the example of Youtube. But this is basically how it always happens. Look for example at the hate Phil Fish got and the negativity that shows whenever he showed up somewhere.

But on the other hand, theres a lot of positivity over at the SuperHyperCube comment section both on here and on Youtube. Sure, there were negative assholes there, but one of the most upvoted comments was something like "Hes super rad!"

Usually the drama, expecially the personal stuff you witness on the internet, is happening because on how Social Media itself is structured. Everyone has the same chance to become famous if people enjoy some idea. Youtube enables people to become their own star, or their own "Personal Jesus" if you will. So with this in mind, content creators create the stuff the audience wants, which may also be topics the content provider enjoys in the first place. Meanwhile, people who are subscribed to a channel may as well become content creators with sizeable audiences themselves and may be inspired to do the same thing, thus the drama and the possibile negativity you see on other places increase, see the example about negative internet comments and Phil Fish in the last paragraph.

Anyway, it is because everyone has more or less the same starting opportunities on Social Media sites like Youtube, online arguements on Youtube bascially became a "you vs me" deal where everything can turn into a personal and emotional matter. But since Youtube individuals are channels with a userbase, it will always become a "us vs them" fight in which one side of the coin fights another. I also never seen that happen otherwise. Not only that, but everyone turns into a public speaker, because Social Media on the big sites are open and unrestrictive.

And I hope I do not sound unreasonable, but these things were always similar to the stuff we see now, even way before Youtube and other Social Media like Facebook existed. Austin Walker didn't lie when he spoke about that harrasment was a ding since Day 1 of the internet in one of the Beastcasts. People back in the day just didn't had the measures to express their negativity so publically and didn't had the ways to agitate others. I don't even have to prove my point on this one, you certainly felt sad if you read too many negative online comments, even if it happened indirectly.

So what I'm basically saying is "The Negativity machine needs to feed itself". There is no point into fighting it. Just do not become a part of the machine by letting the negativity caused by it affect you.

So in short, ignore the comments on sites that upset you and join communities that you find enjoyable. Stick away from comment sections of huge sites like youtube and do not look into Twitter and Facebook for too long, though I can't think of anyone who would look at Social Media comments for a prolonged time anyway. If you feel the urge to read Youtube comments, I recommend that you get one of these.

People stating opinion as fact is another thing that I think are ruining the image of the game player. Jeff says Shenmue is a terrible game. Fine, that's his opinion, but to say the people who do like the game are wrong is just absurd.

I assume that its just miscommunication. Everyone can have their own opinion, thats common sense. When Dan said he enjoys this game I do not see him getting picked on just because of his opinion. All what happened was like a few seconds of discourse. Hell, at the subject of Dan, even when Jeff and the team lost their minds over his opinion on Terminator 3 it wasn't a "Heaven or Hell" scenario where he had to contest his objectivity or else he had to leave.

Furthermore, right and wrong are not extreme concepts. On the small picture, some arguements may be objectively correct but on the big picture they may not.

I'm a firm believer that opinions that aren't demeaning are an important thing to have. At the very best it helps people to understand a oposing viewpoint better than they did before. A good thing would still be to have a discussion based upon a viewpoint that is thrown in a room.

At the end of the day, people get angry over the dumbest things because it is the internet, this doesn't mean it is a rule that everyone must adhere to. There is no need to understand the Internet as a whole. Just use your energy to find the places where you can feel positivity over video gaming again and have fun.

EDIT: The stuff I wrote felt odd so I felt the need to rewrite a bit on what I mean.

@csl316: The Lotus II theme is dope. Another great Amiga song is the one from Formula One: Grand Prix. Vastly underrated in my opinion. The intro is also one of the most technically advanced ones on the Amiga. I remember that it took way longer to load on my Amiga than on the video though.

Heres the link if you're interested

Too bad that Dan never had the Joy on playing Die by the Sword as a Teenager. Now that would be a game that is very much to his liking. Instead he played Nightmare Creatures, which is also like the most generic Video Game name ever.

I mean, you can chop off a leg of your enemies, pick it up and then use it as a weapon. Sorta like a playable Monthy Python joke. Including watching enemies hopping around in the silliest way with only one leg while still trying to kill you, the games really is all sorts of fun.

Every time I hear Freespace I cheer up a little bit, then seconds later I get sad because I believe a third game will never come out, but heres hope that I might be wrong.

Though I'm pretty sure every game dev possible moved on from it. Its up to the fans to handle possible sequels. Some rich dude should just buy the FS license and then just assemble a team of hardcore fans to make a game that everyone needs.

I believe that a crowdfuned FS3 would probably turn into a Shenmue 3 situation because hundreds of thousand of people still want a Freespace sequel. I have no idea if the devs who made FS would even stay faithful to what made the Freespace series great in the first place.

There were points within the FS community where mods alone reached NMS levels of hype, the community is full of enthusiasts who cherish stuff that merely resembles a possible sequel.

People who played it in 1999 are still talking about it so I wouldn't even be suprised if Volition would release FS3 in secret at some point and it would still sell very well past above the million mark. Thats how good people believe this game series is and how much the internet would explode whenever a possible FS sequel is going to be mentioned.

@mrcraggle: Ahhh yeah, I should've mentioned that also, I wrote a quick comment without much thought there! Should've totally elaborated on what I wanted to say there.

What happened was that I've read through your comment and out of personal curiosity I was like "Huh, has development really stopped in 2008?" and just quickly googled it, sorry if I confused you there.

"Sakura Heights"

Thats exactly what Sakuragaoka means, nice :D!

Also Sakuregoraka may be the unintentionally (?) funniest thing about this Endurance Run yet.

@mrcraggle: A quick Google search of updates on Dreamcast Emulators revealed that in recent weeks there were major developments on these things, look it up.

The Emulator is called DEmul.
