Update: I couldn't use the method I used above to charge the controller anymore. If anyone is experiencing the same problem it is due to a defective battery, do yourselves a favor and just return the battery to the store you bought it from for a replacement, or call microsoft for a replacement if the store won't accept it.

I also just got a black battery pack for my elite controller and experienced the same problem; the red light would turn green after a few seconds. I kept disconnecting and reconnecting the cable every time the light turned green, until it stayed red. The controller seems to be charging normally now.
